High School Absences

So I was wondering if colleges see your high school attendance record. I skipped my last 2 days of school this year because we weren't doing anything, and now it says I have "14 Periods of Unexcused Absences". So will colleges, UF in particular, see this on my transcript or on my record? And could it possibly hurt my chances in getting in?

I’m pretty sure they see it, but I can’t imagine two days in a high school career being that big of a deal.

I don’t think they see it. If they do, it won’t affect you at all. Two absences is certainly normal. Even five wouldn’t hurt you. I was nearly truant senior year (missed nearly 10% of classes) and it didn’t affect me at all.

Attendance in many college (lecture based) classes is optional anyway- if you can learn the material and pull of the grades, they don’t care how often you come.

I have 35 unexcused absences in a class, 20 each in every other class.

Attendance is irrelevant.

Im a straight-A student in high school and take all honor classes cause i want to get into an really good ivy league college and later medical school, etc… and then finally become either an OB/GYN or a surgeon, I have never gotten in trouble, but my teacher accidentally counted me absent in the beginning of the school year, but now he says it might be too late to fix it, now i have an unexcused absence, plus i was tardy to my french class a month later because i was finishing an English Iliad essay in the library, but she forgot to turn it in to office, so now i have two, but she’s going to fix that, but the main point is, what do colleges see? And do they see the attendance records? What happens when you have an unexcused absence because this is truly unfair I really don’t deserve this, im a good person, like seriously, im starting to really get annoyed. Please reply and excuse the long paragraph and excessive questions.

^ Get over your life. “im a good person, like seriously…” You’re kidding, right? Unless its perfect attendance for 12 years straight or 50% attendance, NO ONE CARES AT ALL. I miss AT LEAST 10 days every school year. Who cares? No one. What do people care about? Grades, scores, essays, EC. And these only for a few years.

megan: I seriously hope you’re joking or attempting to be funny/trollish. SMH

Colleges see whatever you high school sends them. High school transcripts don’t all look the same. If yours reports attendance, then colleges will have access to that information. If it doesn’t, they won’t.

But T26E4 is right: except in the rarest of cases, even if they see it, they won’t care.

Most engaged top students have huge amounts of absences, both excused and unexcused, depending on the school’s excuse policies. That’s normal. Students are out of class for on and off campus college visits, sports and music events, academic contests, and special events of all sorts, in addition to any sick days. Our D has missed at least one full day every single week this year, often more. Not only is this not a problem, colleges actually want students who can get good grades with a full load of rigorous courses and also who are also involved outside the classroom. Absences can be an indication of success rather than struggle.

A full day every week? That seems like a lot, just because at some point you are missing content necessary for the classes! And if you miss 20% of the classes (even if excused) and aren’t missing anything important, what does that say about the rigor of the courses? My parents avoided pulling me out of school at all costs, even for college visits. It seems like a really weird message to send to miss school to visit a school. Is this just me?

One can just go online to see anything they missed?

Visiting a college during class time gives a prospect a much better sense of what campus like is really like than visiting in summer or on a sleep weekend morning. Nearly all high schools excuse a certain number of absences for college campus visits. Also, college admissions staff routinely visit high schools during school hours to talk with prospects and these absences are also excused.

Our D’s absences are abundant because of a fall sport, debate and two pull-out programs, all sponsored by the school.
