High School and Admissions (probably for Ad Dan)

I was wondering how much your high school played a factor in admissions. Do you ever go back and check records of former/current students from particular high schools to see how they have done at Hopkins?

also another question for admissions daniel: Can I become an admissions volunteer? what's the application process? Basically, I will be content with any jobs you guys have at the admissions office (tour guide, paper work, etc...)

viennariver:
The high school you attend will not impact the review of your application positively or negatively. The Admissions committee does not have preferences related to high schools or regions. Students are judged on what they have accomplished with relation to the opportunities available to them.

The Admissions Committee does do research on schools every year, but that is not going to impact an individual applicant. That research is done so each Admissions counselor has a better understanding of the school and its profile.

Jimmy@:
Recruitment of new admissions volunteers has already began. The Office held two huge initial meetings two weeks ago. If you are interested in volunteering, you should stop by the Admissions front desk in Mason Hall and ask for an Admissions Volunteer information form. Do note that Mason Hall will not be open until this Thursday, Sept. 27.

Highschools that are within competitive states such as California and New Jersey are considered in different ways compared to schools that are not from competitive regions.

Private schools are taken into consideration just as much as public schools but of course with different aspects come into play such as availability of academic resources, level of difficulty in AP courses, grade inflation or deflation, credibility of guidance counselor recommendations, and etc..

At Hopkins, you got kids coming from schools ranging from Exeter and Philips Andover to unknown public schools in the middle of nowhere. Your appicantion will be evaluated based in the context of your highschool surroundings, so of course if you come from a district that has low allocation of monetary funds dedicated towards education, and your school offers only two AP courses as a result of it, then your highschool would be considered in a different light compared to elite pretigious private colleges like Exeter and Philips Andover.

Admissions Daniel:

I went to the newly located admissions office on friday and asked for the "Admissions Volunteer Information Form" at the front desk, and the lady there told me that they didn't have the form there at the moment. She also said that the admissions office doesn't really need volunteers right now, and advised me to come back at the end of october. Can you confirm these facts, admissionsdaniel?

As I mentioned before, recruitment for the volunteer groups was conducted in early September. Maybe at this time the various groups are not looking for new members. The one volunteer group I oversee has already made our selections ... I am not sure about the other groups. I assume based on the message you got from the front desk that they are no recruiting right now. Since I have been on the road and not in the office, I am not sure about any of this. You may contact Celeste Sedo at celeste.sedo@jhu.edu to see if the recruitment of new Admissions volunteers is still going on.
