High school and local scholarships -- any age limits?

DS’s high school offers a few scholarships with money from its alumni. He applied for them some time ago. In the eligibility statement, it only mentioned for seniors who are planning to attend colleges and for particular subjects. Today son was told he’s not qualified b/c he is not 18. I don’t think it is right. I know quite a few kids who are 17 when graduate.

Is it common 18 is required for scholarships? Son is upset b/c i made him apply.

Scholarships can set any limits they want to. The only ones I’ve seen that are very specific, no flexibility with age are those from the department of defense. You must be 18 by the deadline, which I thought was pretty early, like June 1. My daughter was not eligible as she was 17 all through her first semester in college.
