High School Class of 2013

A tonn of kids at my school got into UNC (instate.) I think around 15 are going. I’ll for sure apply there next year, and it’s one of my top schools, but I don’t know how much I actuallly wanna go there.

Edit: I’m literally 30-40 minutes from UNC, and I still haven’t visited. Hahah, I’ll have to change that soon.

^ If I was instate my parents would probably force me to go, assuming I would get accepted.

UNC has some nice scholarships but they’re hard to get. I wouldn’t even consider going if I didn’t get one. For sure applying to UVA, but not to UMich cause there’s no way I could afford it.

Nahh my parents don’t care. I’m paying for it anyway.

Ah, that reminds me, some girl from my school chose Yale over UNC full ride.

I could understand that, but I probably wouldn’t do it.

I really want to go to school in England, but it all kind of depends on how my AP scores turn out.

@Mystical: My parents aren’t giving me a limit, but they do expect it to be reasonable (10-12 at the most?). I’ll probably only apply to ~7 though.

Personally, I don’t care if there is a (good) sports team. I enjoy school spirit and I’m an athlete, but I really am indifferent. :P

I’m applying to about 5 or 6. Three reaches, one match, one safety. Although I’d like to find another match.

Lolz I’m probably gonna end up with about 15.

About 10 reaches, 3 matches, and 2 safeties.

The thing is, between UK schools and schools with 5-10% admissions rates, I feel like so much of it is luck that applying to more will help. Idk.

Well, it depends how much your family is willing to pay and what your EFC is. For me, a top university is much cheaper than my state school. For certain fields, like investment banking and politics, a top degree is necessary. For a degree such as engineering, it really isn’t.

Anyone else take subject tests (or the SAT) this may? 700 on USH, that was a close one.

Also agreed that engineering degrees don’t necessarily have to come from top tier colleges, that’s why I’m seriously looking at some good state schools. Also I’m not sure if I’ll get enough FA from private schools.

@LitNuclearMatch: Hey! I’m in the same boat as you, unfortunately. My parents make too much for any need-based financial aid. When I first began looking at colleges, I was looking at top notch, private universities (Carnegie Mellon, Rice, NYU, etc). When I realized the debt I’d be in after college, and my future career (filmmaking), debt is not a good option.

Now I’m looking at very good public schools. UT Austin is my #1 choice, as I get instate tuition and it has the best filmmaking program and Japanese major in Texas. I won’t graduate with much, if any, debt and it’s a very good school.

I’m taking USH and Math2/English in June. I don’t know if I’m ready for Math2 though, even with pre calc.

Just got a 730 on USH. If it wasn’t for CC I would be so psyched with my score.

And to the person who keeps asking about why going to a good undergrad school is important, you get the best job prospects (for most fields, at least). It is impossible to get into investment banking and consulting from anything but top schools, and those are two of the most highly valued jobs for post undergrads.

760 in USH and 750 in Bio. I also feel like I would be a lot happier about this if it weren’t for CC. Quick question, I took the ACT and got a way better score than I did on the SAT so I’m sending that. Because of that my SATIIs are optional to send, are my scores high enough that it would be beneficial to add them? At schools like Rice, Washu, Tufts, Northwestern, ect.?

^I don’t think I’m even taking the SAT II’s. I’m sending my ACT score instead of my SAT as well. :)

^^LitNuclearMatch was talking about more “top” universities rather than “good” ones. Of course going to a “good university” is crucial, but a “top” university sometimes doesn’t have benefits besides prestige. The degree that has the greatest weight is the most recent, in my opinion.

I feel the same way…740 on chem and im disappointed lol

^ What a coincidence. Even I got a 740. Looks like the curve is harsh. Clearly, it’s a good score :p

You guys talking about Subject Tests reminds me I havn’t signed up for any yet. I’m taking the ACT with Writing next month, but some schools I know want to see the Subject Tests. I’m going for Architecture, so which ones should I take? I was thinking Math 1 or 2, maybe Italian, or US History?

Math 2 definitely, and a science if you can. If you’re good at Italian and USH then take those too.

Ugh, I’m behind it looks. The earliest date I could take Math 2 and USH is June 2 (I’m not sure I would be prepared for Math 2) or I would have to wait for October.
