High School Class of 2018

Hey @mamaba here is a site https://www.edx.org/course?search_query=java

If you want to go more in depth then try the AP online course https://www.udemy.com/decoding-ap-computer-science-a/learn/ enjoy!!!

Dream school I’d probably Duke but I love Virginia Tech and PSU as well

@apple1893 thanks so much!

@mamaba https://course.edhesive.com is an amazing resource if you want forum help. It’s a live mooc full of other high schoolers taking the class for either credit or self-study. Class starts on the 28th and is completely free if you are taking it without a coach. I’m using this just in case I zone out in my zero hour comp sci class. :)>-

Do you guys plan on taking your ACT, SAT or both?

@Livdagos Both, but for some reason I like the ACT more. Are you gonna take them junior year?

Wow everyone must be busy with homework! My school starts August 31st! Well, I’m ready for the pressure!

@aspringgirl I’m in AP World right now too, we also get a ton of reading! My teacher isn’t that bad though, as the reading he gives only amounts to around an hour tops. He also assigns Crash Course videos, too, which are fun to watch. There was one AP World teacher at my school who on the first day assigned close to 2 hours of reading + a project due by the next class…he is also the AP Euro teacher as well

@Livdagos The ACT is required in my state, but I am also probably going to take the SAT as well since PSAT and SAT prep essentially fall under the same umbrella.

@mamaba Why don’t you just ask your guidance counselor to get your schedule fixed? We have close to 2 weeks at the beginning of the school year to make changes.

Are any of you taking AP Stats? That class is ridiculously boring…

I plan on taking the SAT only. I think I’m going to take it in March, which is also the first administration of the new SAT. I’m going to try and get all of my testing done this year so I don’t have to do it next year.

@apple1893 I am most likely taking the ACT but once more info on the new SAT, I might change my mind or if I excel in one and I feel really good about that score I won’t bother with the other one. Most likely at the beginning of junior year is when I plan on taking it.

@Livdagos I’m going to be taking both ACT and SAT :frowning: The SAT is required at my school but I am definitely an ACT person! I’m taking ACT beginning of Junior year too! That way there’s lots of time to retake if I totally mess up!

@sewin2music Yeah, that is why I am taking the test at the start of Junior year. Then I have enough time to prepare for AP exams and SAT subject tests!

@ish512 the problem is the majority of my classes I’m taking have low enrollment due to being honors/AP so they only run once a day. So the period that Java is running is also the same period as my honors lit class and neither can be changed. I’m just hoping my school will honor the online certificate and allow me to take a study to do the online work in instead. Otherwise I’ll have to wait til senior year to take AP Comp Sci A :frowning:

@mamaba If you are as committed as I am, self-studying AP Computer Science will be a breeze. I am currently on the sections 4/18 and understand it fully.

@apple1893 so far so good with the java intro I’ve been looking at online. I’m getting the hang of it and actually on week 2 already (oops).

If they don’t accept my request for a study to do the online class (my guidance department is IMPOSSIBLE to work with) I think I’ll be switching into VB and C++ just so that I can at least take a programming class.

I also just found out that my AP Bio teacher has taken a full year off for her maternity leave instead of taking october- christmas break like she had originally informed us. Kinda scared to find out who we’ll be getting and if they can even begin to fill her shoes since she was known schoolwide for being amazing.

@mamaba not to influence your decision but, c++ seems like a more common language so it would be best to go with that if you have the option.

How is everyone? I’ve been busy with marching band and our honors program stuff. I took my first test in Biology and got a 93 :(. I guess I’ll study harder for the next one. My online college class is starting to get interesting! Sociology is fun ;))

Hey @HelloThereHola 93 is an ok test grade, but I like you attitude!

My school doesn’t start till the 31st but I’ve been self-studying AP computer science, reading, finishing online courses, and practicing for boys varsity soccer!

My CS 101 (Computer Science 101) course from Stanford is going really well and I am managing a 100% and will begin 6.00.1 (Introduction to Computer Science and Programming using Python) from MIT! I am so excited to be learning three programming languages (JavaScript, Java, Python)!

@HelloThereHola (I repeated this username so you would look at this IMPORTANT message) Do you recommend that I start looking over the first couple chapters of Biology till school starts? Do you think it is that hard?

My dream school is also UCLA I didn’t do so great freshmen year but I’m really confident I’ll bring up my grades sophomore year as I have a 1750 on the old SAT no study

Hey I didn’t do amazing like u guys freshmen year but I’m confident I can reverse the trend sophomore year as I have a 1750 on the SAT no study
