High School Class of 2021

@nikibanana Hey there !! I only took Honors Biology before taking the test, because our school doesn’t allow for freshmen to take AP classes. I got 770 on the E-test, but I thought that I would do better. The test wasn’t that hard, and I found the Barron Book to be the most useful. I also studied Princeton Review and Kaplan but the content was too detailed and the practice tests were unrealistic. I would say that the actual test is a little bit easier than the Barron practice tests, so don’t worry about it! Also since you took AP biology you obviously have more knowledge on the topics than I do so you’ll do great! Also I would recommend that you scan through both the E and M test to decide which one you want to take
Wow you founded a non-profit? That’s impressive!

@wistfulwords Hello! I’m new here too! You’re taking an AP class during the summer? That’s really impressive as well! Our school doesn’t offer AP euro, I think.

Hey guys! I’m taking the mandatory health class over the summer since it’s a semester class, and the course ends tomorrow.

On Sunday I’m going to be going to SNFI (Stanford Debate Camp) for two weeks since I already have one year of debate experience. I’m not sure how the camp is gonna be like though, has anyone been there before? Any info would be appreciated!

At the start of summer I also worked at the debate summer camp our school held for middle school kids, and I really enjoyed the experience!

I’m also writing a teen fiction novel because I really enjoy reading them and I’ve always wanted to write one
I don’t know if it’s any good though lol.
I just wanted to do something different

Hope everyone’s having a great summer !!!

Hi everyone! Hope you’re all enjoying the break!

@caligirl51515 I’ve not gone but a Stanford debate camp would be super fun!! Have a great time!

I’ve been studying for the August SAT. My math scores are pitiful (600-620) :frowning: but my reading + writing scores are great (770-800)! I’m super lopsided lol

I’m working on starting my school’s SciOly team rn. Need to contact my principal soon!

I’m also working on a local charity to send books to homeless shelters because my friend says there is nothing to do in them and there’s nothing better than a good book. I really hope I can pull it off. I want to help people

I start school August 14. Ew. Not excited to go back at all. I have to go to school August 7 to lead the freshmen at their orientation. Let’s hope it goes well!

@CavsFan2003 Wow sending books to shelters is a great thing to do!

Also ugh I start school on August 13. EW.

@CavsFan2003 How does your school go about recruiting volunteers for freshman orientation. I was thinking of doing the same but I haven’t seen anything from my school yet that talks about it.

I start school like September 10th ish lol.

I took honors bio and was wondering if I should prepare for the SAT subject test. @caligirl51515 How much did you prepare?

out of curiosity, what ECs are you guys planning to do next year?

Next year I want to be on my school’s model un team, but you have to try out to get on. There’s only one spot and whoever gets the spot doesn’t even get to compete since it’s an alternate, plus the captains of the team hate me for no reason and are family friends with the other girl who wants the spot so there goes my chances.

but I have a few more weeks until then so hopefully everythng turns out okay

@clo2021 We had to apply for the position.

@wistfulwords I’ve got a lot on my plate next year. I’m doing DECA, maybe Speech, I’m starting the SciOly team, and have an internship with a big local business. Also am thinking of doing Spell Bowl and the academic team.

@wistfulwords that’s weird, my school’s mun team is super inclusive. I’m being a mentor this upcoming year and will be on executive board junior year. This year as a mentor I’m gonna be helping train new freshmen.

My ECs will be student senate, MUN, science olympiad, jv (possibly varsity but don’t really want to) soccer, and I’m looking to start a politics club. Might not do scioly and instead do mock trial but not sure yet. What are everyone’s ECs outside of school related clubs and teams?

My ECs currently are working with my non-profit, independent research (advice for those interested in going into research: I can’t emphasize doing something you’re genuinely passionate in, because if you carry out for a year or longer, it will not seem like a burden, and will be fun more than anything! A plus to that is that if you’re passionate, if you decide to compete in science fair, showing you’re passionate helps you seem knowledgeable and helps you really connect with judges. I went to Intel ISEF and National JSHS this year and even won a few awards, so PM me if you want advice on getting started/going forward!!), piano, some clubs at school (Girl Up, Math Club, etc.), and Bio and Chem Olympiad.

My school starts in 4 days :(( goodbye summer break :((

@whoknowswhere25 I mean it isn’t the worst that MUN in my school is super exclusive, just a bit annoying. I think it’s because the certain conference they compete in only allows them to have certain spots. If I end up being team captain I’ll have them compete at more inclusive conferences so that everyone can be on the team.

also, my other ECs are pretty heavy anyway. I’m going to be in our school musical, a political club, helping a senator campaign on weekends, debate, a coding mentorship, being the poetry reader for a lit mag (just confirmed that today!) and editor in chief for my school’s litmag and newspaper, an internship for an international education charity, plus hopefully will start a national English honors society at my school and run it.

other than that, I’m just going to write a ton and hopefully win some awards!

@nikibanana one of my friends was at Intel ISEF this year! did you meet anyone from the Bronx high school of science?

@wistfulwords I might have?? I remember meeting a few kids from NY, but you meet a lot of people from all around the world throughout the week of ISEF, so I might not remember if they were exactly from there :frowning:

Hey guys, I’ve heard that a lot of people volunteer at the hospital for community service! From your experiences, does volunteering at a hospital actually include like interacting with the patients and doctors? I’m just curious

@caligirl51515 You will rarely have any interaction with doctors. Also most hospitals won’t let you actually help/ interact with patients until you’re 18. That’s how it is in my state; however, I did find a hospital where I’ll be interacting with patients.

@caligirl51515 I’m 15 and am allowed to escort patients in a wheelchair.

@stanford200381 ok thank you!
@whoknowswhere25 wow really?

Hey fellow ‘21 people!

I feel like my ECs are too basic…take a look:

Concert choir
Women’s choir
Orchestra
Piano (outside of school)
Student Council
Student Council Class Board Vice President
Science Research (My school doesn’t start the program until sophomore year so I will be beginning this year!)
National Honors Society (once again my school doesn’t start until sophomore year, and no NJHS)
JV Softball

I was wondering if there is anything I can do to make My ECs stand out more so I can be a more competitive candidate, because I feel like I’m not competitive enough. You guys have really great ECs btw.

@nikibanana woah that’s so cool! I’ve always wanted to go to big science competitions like that! A girl from my school went to ISEF 2 years ago and was a finalist (I think)! A bunch of other kids were semifinalists at the Siemens competition. Just curious, what category is your project in? I’m thinking about doing Animal Sciences because when I grow up I want to be a veterinarian.
