I recently had the idea of starting a medical interest club or something of that nature at my school.
I do have some ideas about what kind of stuff would go on in that club, but I'll really appreciate any of your ideas/suggestions.
Thanks! :]

you could volunteer at a hospital or raise money for some kind of research.

That’s pretty cool! I hope it works out.

One thing you could do is see if there are any medically related clubs or organizations in colleges or universities near your high school that might be interested in forging a relationship between their club/organization and a high school organization. Theoretically, upperclassmen in those organizations have the know how of the pathway to a career in medicine and could help your organization out with ideas.

If you could find some guest speakers in the community (doctors/medical students), that would be great as well.

As for possible service events, if there are health fairs around, try to see if they allow high school students. Those can give a good understanding of things people in the medical professions might do.

Those are just a few of the things I could think of right now. If you wouldn’t mind, I’d like to hear your ideas too. :)

My school has a club called medical society.

Thanks, everyone! :] I really appreciate your thoughts & hopefully I’ll be able to put some of them into action!

@Ederiss: Some of my ideas were actually the same as yours! =) Some local med students have started a thing where they have meetings with high school students who want to know more about going into medicine. I was hoping to collaborate with them in some way, like you said. I was also thinking about the guest speakers idea, I think it would be cool.

One of my other ideas was to talk about current issues related to medicine & raise awareness in school and/or in the general community. =) I was also thinking of organizing blood drives (some of the grade 12 students are actually doing that this year, since they’re old enough to donate) & fund raisers relating to the awareness raised ^, but my school apparently only allows two major fund raisers a year due to “donor fatigue”… Oh, and I wanted to have a thing where we could match high school students with university students/profs to conduct research in the university labs. (I’m currently looking into that for myself & if it works out I could try it out in the club if people were interested.) Just another more general idea would be to spread info about summer programs relating to medicine (such as volunteering with Doctors Without Borders, or structured learning programs at universities). I do have other ideas but they’re not as “polished”, & they’re just kind of floating around in my head.

The main reason I’m holding back from starting this club is because I’m not sure if many people would join (my school is kind of… ehh…). I also don’t know if I could find a teacher sponsor (is it necessary to have one?), and my principal is really scary & questions every little thing, so… D: Yeah. Hopefully it’ll work next year in grade 11, though… I think it’s too late for this year.

That sounds really great!

I think if you can find a teacher to sponsor the organization, it might help your case with your principal. Try asking some of the science teachers about it. They might be more willing to sponsor something that is somewhat correlated with the subject matter in which they teach. Also, when you talk to your principal, be sure to plan out what you’re going to say ahead of time and mention the things you’re thinking the organization can do so it can establish that some thought has gone into the organization, which should help your case. If you’re concerned about membership, try asking if your fellow classmates are interested so that you have something to start off with. Most of all though, just don’t get discouraged if you run into problems. Running and starting an organization is tough.

It would be good to talk about current issues related to medicine. You might also consider ethics cases, and if you’re particularly ambitious, future medical school interview questions.

The blood drive should be a decent platform so good luck with that.

I’m not sure how feasible a research program for high school students with a university might work out since there’s all these restrictions nowadays. If you’re planning on it though, I’d start emailing now to see if it’s possible. Also, good luck with your search.

If you’re looking into talking about summer programs, Home is a great resource.

Well, good luck with everything! Hope it works out. Keep me posted…haha.

Thanks so much, again! :] And yeah, I’ll definitely keep you posted! I really hope this works!

I think it’s required at my school to have a teacher sponsor & that may be a problem because my science teacher already runs a club & I don’t know any of the other teachers (I’m new this year). I’ll definitely try my best, though, & probably get some of my friends who would be interested in on the idea… maybe one of their science teachers will be able to help.

:( It’s not going so well yet.
I need the med students to reply so I can make a connection with them and have a stronger foundation for the club to actually start.
They haven’t responded the emails I’ve sent in the past week asking questions.
They even had an event today, but didn’t specify the time or place in their email, so I replied to find out about that and they didn’t reply back!
Wow… I guess if they’re not serious about this then it’s going to be a little harder to get the club going.

Oh no. :(

Just keep trying though. I’m sure you can do it! I’ve had my fair share of people that don’t respond or reply to emails. It’s frustrating but when it works, it really works.

If the medical students aren’t seeming to work out, try pre-medical groups at nearby universities. Medical students are super busy so pre-medical groups might have more time.

If you want to go a different route and plan for maybe service events you can do, try contacting the various organizations like the National Kidney Foundation, Muscular Dystrophy Association, etc. to see if they’d allow you to help out at events. They’re usually pretty nice.

Good luck! I hope it gets better. :)
