High School Coach contacting college coaches?

DD's high school coach isn't the most helpful person in the recruiting process. How important is it to have a high school coach, if at all, contact prospective college coaches on your behalf? We just found 3 schools that DD is very interested in and they are great fits for her. DD has emailed the coaches but would a phone call or email from her high school coach be the next step? They are out of state schools so she would not really be on their radar otherwise.

SteveMA,

It seems hs baseball coaches are either extremely helpful or not involved at all. There doesn’t seem to be any middle ground. Possibly your D’s sport is different, but what I hear from friends & neighbors is exactly what I’ve described. Frankly, I don’t know the reason why more hs coaches don’t get more involved.

So, if your hs coach was like my oldest son’s hs coach, it would be better to have the travel coach make that phone call or email. We provided hs coaches name and phone number only when requested. As it turns out, only ONE college coach out of a dozen or so from D1-Ivy, D1-Patriot. traditional D1, and D3 actually called son’s hs coach. The hs coach never returned the college coaches call…so we like to think we read the situation correctly. He got a glowing recommendations from guidance councelors, teachers, but nothing from the hs coach. As it turns out two years later, that hs coach is no longer the head coach. Go figure.

I think if we specifically asked him to and provided emails/phone numbers he would, but I don’t know. She is a golfer so no travel team. I guess I am wondering if having him call/email has more “pull” with these coaches or not. If it does, we will get the information together for him to contact her top 4 or 5 choices. If it doesn’t, we won’t bother. We would request that he BCC us on the email so we know it was done :D.

I used to be a high school basketball coach and we went out of our way to contact schools we thought would be good fits for our athletes. I still send off names of kids to some of my favorite coaches if I spot someone in a game they might be interested in looking at. I guess I just expected that he would do the same.

We never asked our HS coach to call throughout the process not one college coach called the HS coach. Like Fenway, we are in a sport where the club coach is the key player - but even in that case, we never had our club coach reach out (unless they had a specific relationship with the coach) but we did provide all the contact info for both HS and club so they could be contacted. I do know that the club coach was contacted on a few occasions and that alot of conversations went on at tournaments, so there is a chance that coaches will reach out to your coach, so hopefully you can convey how important it would be to respond. But I don’t think it’s critical for your coach be proactively reaching out. The most important call is your daughter calling the coaches directly.

My D’s XC/track coach has been nothing but supportive in regard to her getting recruited. He’s actually offered to email & call the coaches at the schools she’s interested in (and has). It surely won’t hurt her to have a coach call. However, as squidge states above, it is imperative that your D call the coaches herself. She has to be proactive in the recruiting process.
