What high school competitions are out there for high school students to participate in? All subject areas are fine with me. Thank you.

math & science

Well, you can take things like the AMC (Math) and similar chem and physics tests so you can qualify for the olympiads. That is, if they are offered at your school. There are probably a lot more that I don't know of as well.

Or you could persuade your school to register for the test or take the test at another school. For the Chemistry olympiad, you'll have to contact your local coordinator.

The most nationally recognized contests are the AMC/AIME/USAMO and the physics, chem, and biology olympiads.

I'm planning on taking the AMC 10 and AMC 12 sometime. And I would take the Chemistry Olympiad Tests, but seeing as how I'm not a U.S. Citizen, the Physics Olympiad Tests will do. If anyone would care to explain how a school can participate in the Olympiads, please do. Or explain how I can take at another school because I know several schools who have this program.

I'll add a few humanities ones:

National History Day:
www.nationalhistoryday.org

Scholastic Art and Writing Competitions

JFK Profiles in Courage Essay Contest

Concord Review (publishes student history papers)

Or Academic Decathlon...that has many subjects....does your school have a team?

Vegangirl: Thanks for the Humanities-related competitions. I've already started on my NHD project (I made it to Nationals in the Jr. Division last year) and hope to make it again this year but in the Sr. Div. The experience was wonderful!

JTC007: Sadly, no. I've heard of the program and have read about the program for almost a year now (I'm a freshman and read about it somewhat thoroughly during most of 8th grade). My school is generally athletic-driven, like the school funds more of the athletic department than the academics! Therefore, there are barely any highly determined and motivated students around the school as far as I know. Plus, I do not know of any C-average students who would devote their time to the program. Another thing, AD in my state is not even funded by the state as far as I know.

prestige - you'd be surprised by how many people would go out for decathlon. My school is similar to yours - completely athletically driven. It doesnt help that its a parochial school, where we have no say where the money would go. But between fundraisers and fairly successful 8 year consecutive state appearances, we are still going strong! So i'd suggest it to someone. Oh, and it is state funded in hawaii. The only state that is an active participant, and isnt state funded is my state - nebraska - all privately funded!

There's the AHSIMC. It's a math competition with iPods as prizes. go to www.ahsimc.com

Prestige- cool! NHD is a great experience. I was at nationals this past summer too. What category did you compete in? I did a sr. individual documentary (and am doing one again this year).

What does AMC stand for?

AMC is something like American Math Contest.

Consider Quiz Bowl, if you live in a state that has it (which is like most of the Midwest, the South, and California.)

consgrafelope: Hmmm ... maybe I should try. Yeah, I'm going to be forming new clubs this year (either of service or contest purposes, like Science Bowl) and maybe I could talk to a faculty member about it. And Hawai'i is actually funded by the state? I read an article about a year ago that it was no longer funded ... well, maybe that changed. Yeah, I know that Hawai'i continues to participate year by year. Thing is, the same school wins states every year. From the article, which I'm now not sure is valid or not, said that since the same school always won AD in Hawai'i, it did not provide a wide variety of students to flourish and attain knowledge from the program, or something to that nature.

vegangirl: I participated in the paper category, which is simply not as exiciting as the documentary or performance category! Haha, I'd really like to participate in one of those sometime. Have you started doing research on your topic yet?

And thanks to everybody else who has given input in the discussion. But more ideas are welcome. :)

I was just looking over my posts and I thought I'd bump this.

AMC...AIME...UIL...HOSA...International Science Fair...NHD

USACO if you're into programming.

Most states have local Envirothons. The winning teams go to the national competition.

Cognetics

Future Problem Solvers (www.fsps.org I believe)

Debate and Speech events (see www.nflonline.org)

Science Olympiad

www.usamts.org

ACSL- american comp sci league has computer science tests. buts its not a very big thing, only maybe 15 schools in the US participate in the classroom edition, i dunno about individual

NLE- natl latin exam - pretty easy, has been gaining popularity recently (in terms of # of students taking it)

NFE - National French Exam (also called Grand Concours - See http://www.frenchteachers.org/concours)
