high school counselors are ignorant...

my high school counselor told me that to have a legitimate shot at getting into prestigious schools i would have to do well on the sat and that east coast schools look down upon people taking the act... true?? i know not for ND but what about ivy league??? (sry i know this is an nd thread!)

also he told me that i should leave my low SAT score on my h.s. transcript when applying to notre dame to show that "i care enough to take the SATs" i got an 1830 (i know) on my SATs but i got a 31 on my act so i wanted to take the SATs off my transcript when sending it to nd but my counselor told me not to... any1 have a comment on that???

i mean if i dont send official scores i think they disregard it anyways (which i wont send the official scores) but yeah let me know what i should do...

also i took the sat IIs math, us history, and physics and i got 720 650 and 700 should i send those too???

thanks

"high school counselors are ignorant..."

tell me about it.....mine said that I have a good chance at Harvard and Yale.....but could have trouble getting into Uni of san diego....hahahahhaha laughed all day bout that one...........no advice though sorry

definitely send the ACT score; i don't think you can only send the SAT II scores without sending the SAT I score b/c i think they are on the same sheet. it's a tough call b/c those subject test scores are good

yeah well heres the thing i took the SAT and ACT september of my jr year to see which one i was better out and which one i should concentrate on and i did slightly better on my act so i took the act 2 more times wit some prep and whatever and i stopped trying after my first try of the sat but some colleges require sat IIs...

hmm maybe i should try the SATs again... ahhhh there are only so many saturday film sessions i can miss for football before my coach takes away my captainship haha anyways thanks for the advice... i will see if i can send the sat II score w/o sending the sat...

im open to any other opinions please! : )

If you can retake you SAT and improve it, send the scores- if not, tell your counseler to take the SAT score off your transcript. ND is a Midwestern school- they don't care if you took the SAT or the ACT- they won't discriminate and that 1830 could really hurt you.

it could but they say (at least) that they will only look at the higher score, so they will only consider the 31

Yes, but they will still see the SAT score, and you can't assume that it won't affect their decision in any way, even if they say they will only officially consider the higher score. Better to be safe than sorry.

True. For what it's worth though I wouldn't worry too much if you can't get it changed, but that is just me

My daughter's high school counselor told her a great major for her would be Women's Studies, that it was hot in the job market. The same counselor told my son that he had little chance to get into ND, despite a 34 ACT, because a valedictorian a few years back had been rejected, and if they reject valedictorians, they must reject everybody (which, come to think of it, would make it really hard to run a school....but, I digress). He got in EA.

My feeling is that anyone motivated enough to post on these boards and research on the internet is going to know more than the counselor will. Counselors are paid to maintain student records, make sure application documents and transcripts get to be where they need to be by deadline, make sure kids are taking the tests they need to take, etc. If you have one that will make sure your materials are in and complete by deadline, you are doing well.

Seems to me, too, that unless you are at a pretty elite and pricey prep school, you aren't going to have counselors geared to getting the best and the brightest into top tier schools. You are going to have counselors trying to get kids connected to mid-tier and state schools, and maybe finding some money if it is out there. They know the state schools like the back of their hand. But I guarantee you they don't know as much about the Ivy's or top-tiers if you are thorough in your research.

You're a smart kid. Trust your instincts!

They can only use the SAT score if you submit an offical score report.

If you submit the official SAT report, since your equivalent ACT score is better, they will use the ACT.

OK, I don't remember, does ND use SAT II's? If they are required, all your scores will be reported, even the SAT I's (but don't worry about it). BTW, your SAT II scores are good!

so should i send my sat IIs even though my sat Is will be on it!!!? and WS-- they are not required but they will accept them and look at them... i could always throw in on my "final note" to disregard the SAT Is because i took them when i was young or you know something to that effect...
