hi. Im moving over the USA the following week & will be joining grade 11 (age - 16) . Can anyone tell me which courses I have to take in both 11th & 12th to have a rigorous schedule and get into a good university that offer premed programmes (like NYU)?

A few stats about me:

1) Really strong in maths, and all 3 sciences
2) Weak in CR and Essay writing.

my CR doesnt make me an Ivy League student. the previous time I wrote the SAT, I got 800 in Math, but only managed a 400 in my CR and 590 in Writing (the SAT was written a year back). do high schools offer preparatory materials for the SAT? Im totally clueless ....

Is AP Biology, AP Physics, AP Chemistry & AP Calculus a good course schedule over the 2 years? Will it benefit my university applications. Also, if I were to write SAT Chem or SAT Bio.... is the syllabus similar to that of the AP?

Thanks a lot!

Hello sahil.
First of all I have to say that I like your determination. I am also on the Pre-Med track in 11th grade trying to get in all of the good AP courses so that I look good for the universities in Florida.

I am currently taking AP Biology and AP Calculus AB. Those two are very good for the track that we are on. Next year I plan to take AP Chemistry and Calculus BC.

As of next year AP Physics B is going to be turned into AP Physics 1 Algebra Based and AP Physics 2 Algebra Based, a course that will take two years to complete. If you can take AP Physics C then that looks a lot better, but just taking AP Physics B will not make a significant difference when going into Pre-Med.

Two other very important AP classes are AP Statistics and AP Psychology. The MCAT is changing as of 2015, and AP Psychology and college level sociology are required classes. At USF AP Statistics is recommended on the Pre-Med path, but that may vary within each school.

SAT Chem and SAT Bio are based off of what you would learn in a chemistry or biology class. Taking those courses will be great preparation and is very similar to the syllabus of AP. There may even be extra material covered in the AP classes.

I wish you luck on the critical reading portion. Even thought you are going into the mathematics and sciences, writing and reading is still very important. AP English may not be the way to go, but taking AP English 3 Honors would be my suggestion.

Hey. Thanks a lot for your reply.

Just a few more questions. How many courses should I be taking in Year 11 and 12? Around 6-8/per year?

Also according to you… AP Biology, AP Calculus AB, AP Physics C in year 11 & AP Chemistry, AP Calculus BC, AP Psychology is a good course? together with AP English 3 Honors?

Is it mandatory to take the Social Sciences as well? Such as History, Geography or Econs?

Could you please tell me your courses for these 2 yrs? Thanks a lot once again! :)

What you are asking depends on the state and the school.
Especially since you are transferring to the USA, you might be exempt from certain high school requirements because of doing something equivalent in your country.
In Florida, a social studies course of World History, US History, and Government/Economics is required.

I assume you’re moving to New York because of wanting to go to NYU. Here is a link that might be helpful.

http://schools.nyc.gov/NR/rdonlyres/215FF06B-DCA3-442B-89DF-18E674DC867E/0/Acpolicygened.pdf

In Florida I will be taking 7 credits, which is one extra than I really have to do.

Also remember that what you take in high school is only important to a certain extent. I am taking courses like Physical Education so that I don’t have a stressful course load. Don’t get carried away too much. It looks like you will get into whatever college you want if you keep your grades up.

Hi sahil9797! I just wanted to give you my $0.02.

I’m in 10th grade and during the next few years I will be taking AP Biology, AP Chem, and AP Calculus AB. My schedule won’t let me take Calc BC but oh well. : ) KirbyLegs is now convincing me to take AP Psychology, though. If you are taking AP Physics, then that is definitely a bonus. Just take as many AP math and sciences as you think you will be able to handle.

I would also try to get that CR score up, KirbyLegs is right. Although you wish to go the pre-med track, writing and reading are still very important. Wish you the best!
