My high school is not competitive, and harder to get into. Have you crossed paths with the Hearn yet? =)

The Hearn? :)

Hell no DB8 ain't "nerdy"......... not the way i see it, but when I go to competitions some of the other debaters look nerdy. The funniest thing when I go to the competitions is that my school or team are the only Latinos or Mexicans present, the others are either Caucasian or Asian. Debate has lots of involvements with the subjects been thought in school, history, philosophy, political science, reading, writing, communications, and of course the 08-09 db8 will be about energy, which has to do with science.
I see at as any other EC, but it does suck for me that I attend competitions like every other weekend when school begins in fall. There aren't many people in my db8 team at school, there are about12 -14 of us in the team. Well db8 ain't nerdy cause has a mix of personalities, different kinds of people and we all get along well(3 punks, 2 metal heads, 1 surfer/skater, 3 people known for their art work and the others fit in as well, all of us have AP Classes or Honors Classes).

cool, pattern I see is that the idiots go to MUN, and the smart people go to Debate at my school.

Im at Florida Forensics Institute right now but that isn't the point. If hot girls do forensics then it definitely is not a nerdy activitpeoppe who are in forensics @ my school are typically kids with 3.5+ GPA's.

My school is pretty well-versed in both Debate and Speech, and the speech kids are pretty average. The debaters fall into two camp: totally normal and top 20 kids in the grade, or lower GPA and just quietly geeky.

Every delegate dance, my advisor begged us not to go to the delegate dance so he didn't need to walk around and see ...interesting sides to everyone. I always felt like you have to check out the delegate dance (or be there for at least 10 min) to get the true MUN experience.

As an award-winning delegate, let me assure you: I only embarrass myself through notes sent out/received during committee. And by my wonderful abilities to persuade the back of the room (namely the other gender) to sign whatever BS I was writing.

Sorry dragon_scale, I'm that person.... Or, I was until I stopped caring senior year.

It's definitely a nerd thing. Of course the nerds aren't gonna label themselves nerds though.

But if my school had one, I'd definitely join despite the nerd label lol.

Debate at my school wasn't considered a nerd activity (though there were a few nerds there). I quit my senior year, as I wasn't that good. I suppose debaters on CC are addicted to CrossX.com?

PFdebate.com here. It's not as good as crossX, actually, it's not really good at all in my oppinion, but I don't do Policy, and the LD site is horrible. It's not up to date at all.

I'm going into debating next year to improve my public speaking skills. I find it easier to express myself through writing atm so I'd like to practice and balance it out.

I debate in Lincoln Douglas. At my school, the Forensics Team is definately for the most nerdy of the nerdy. But it's not a bad thing because we win quite a bit. I think Forensics is generally really well looked upon a an EC because college know how much time has to be devoted to it. I mean, for competitions alone, it's over 10 hours. And with the amount of preparation that's required in addition, it's even more.

On the other hand, MUN is pretty useless at my high school.

I'm VP of my speech, theater, and debate team at school. We participate in all IEs, forms of debate, and put on a number of shows each year. I do oratory, PF debate, congress, poetry, drama, duo, prose, expository, and impromptu...and will be trying my hand at extemp next year. Our team is the biggest in our district, and attracts a ton of different people from the school. We're actually pretty diverse. Just this year we won the school of excellence award at nationals, which was amazing! So glad I got to be a part of that.

Anyways, I hope more people broaden their understanding of forensics, or speech, or debate, or whatever it is called in their area. It's not just a bunch of nerds debating. Nor is it a bunch of pre-madonna wanna-be actors. The skills students learn with this activity are ones not always learned in the classroom. And, at least on my team, it's definitely a family.

I hope the college or university I choose has a good forensics team. I'm kind of worried that nothing will match up to my high school experience. Anyone else feel that way?

At my school most of the smart people joined Debate including myself. Some of us really liked it and some of us only sorta. But I think the main motivation behind it was to use as an EC. Anyway we all got into pretty good colleges so it seems like debate is pretty good.

It's really fun when you know a lotta people and are close with your team. I was Co-Captain of Public Forum so that was fun. I did Public Forum, Policy, and Extemp for a year. And I did Congress for 3 years. It really helped learn more about the world and writing and etc.

Our team is made up of people that are ambitious, incredibly smart, and competitive. Really, really competitive. But I love it. Anyway, we only look like nerds to the outer world, but really we only have one true nerd. The rest are just fiercely intelligent and fun to be around (of course, it wasn't as fun when I was winning less, and the team was made up of freaks who managed to be gorgeous, smart, and shallow at the same time.... Girls would discuss the relative hotness of a fellow LD'er while complaining about AP Chem homework and their boyfriends...ugh.)
