High School eliminating class rank?

So my school is probably going to be eliminating class rank next year. I am a sophomore currently and I am not sure if that is bad or good. Do any of your schools not have class rank?

We have it at my school but it’s not a big deal to anyone. I like having it because being in the top such-and-such % of my class is another thing to put on college apps.

It is non existent in the UK, if that helps.

It doesn’t really change anything. But it was interesting to know where you would stand against other students.

They got rid of class rank at my school about 5 years ago, I could care less, though it would be interesting to know where I stand, it doesn’t matter.

It’s a huge deal at my school and people can get so competitive. Especially the top 20. We all have basically the same GPA’s so the tiniest A- makes the difference. I really want class rank gone!

I think adding plus or minus to grades is sort of silly and makes people unnecessarily competitive. All As are equal to me, but I do think some high schools’ grading scales are pretty lenient on what is considered an A.

Try to keep your GPA as high as possible and practice for the SAT/ACT/AP exams.
Without class rank, it would be impossible to know whether a 3.6 at your school is considered to be excellent or terrible (due to the sheer variance between school because of grade inflation and deflation). The SAT/ACT/AP exams also serve as great methods to show you have earned your grades, not given due to grade inflation.

I like having class rank. You can’t really compare GPA’s across schools because they can vary widely among schools. You can compare class rank across schools, e.g someone in the top 10% in one school vs someone “merely” in the top third in a different school.

To make a point why all schools should use rankings:

When people applied to NHS at my school we signed our names on a list that was arranged in order of class rank so we could see everyone else’s rank. I always thought it was sort of tacky to just show everyone’s rank like that, but I guess it’s not confidential?

I love not having class rank. It makes my life so much less stressful.
