High school for HFA kid

Hello, I am parent of an 8th grader who is diagnosed with High Functioning Autism/Asperger’s. My son is very strong in Math, Science, Vocabulary, etc. His weaknesses are reading comprehension and written expression but he is getting better steadily. We are looking for a private High school that has programs for kids like him. Any feedback on your experiences and recommendations is appreciated. Thanks.

I think you should check out sites like “Boarding School Review” for information on schools that accommodate learning differences. Are you considering boarding schools? If so, has your son already demonstrated that he can function comfortably away from home? My niece is very high-functioning ASD/Asperger’s (she’s a gifted writer, who had sky-high verbal scores), and she couldn’t manage college away from home. She now lives on her own, as a 30-year-old, but it’s been a long road. Long before anyone ever discussed ASD/Asperger’s, there were always students at boarding schools who were “different” - some got through, many (if not most) did not. Has your son expressed a desire to go away to boarding school? You would know more about schools and resources for day schools near you than most people here. I suggest you discuss this with a learning expert, or consult some groups that specialize in issues related to ASD/Asperger’s. I know that a lot of specialists within public school districts are not good information sources for programs outside their immediate community. Good luck!

Boarding school may a stretch but I am willing to move near the school if needed. I am hoping to find a good fit. Thanks.
