High School Gpa Problems?

At my high school the gpa calculation is as follows(unweighed):

A+=4.0
A=3.67
A-=3.33
B+=3

My gpa right now is around 3.4 but my friends from other towns, who get the same grades as me, have much higher gpa's, they have 3.7's! Also I'm taking all honors classes and I know people in academic classes with a higher gpa but their classes are so much easier! Will this hurt me in the admissions process or do colleges understand that different high schools calculate gpa in different ways? Do they recalculate gpa? And if they do recalculate do they take out electives like gym and ceramics? I want to get into duke so i'm worried they'll see my gpa and just throw away my application!

“or do colleges understand that different high schools calculate gpa in different ways? Do they recalculate gpa?”

yes. yes.

In in exact same boat as you. Private school with A- at 94 out of 100, so DD has a lot of classes with 91 and its a B. Really worked hard this year and finished last quarter with all A’s but due to a really bad freshman quarter (2.97) her over all gpa going into senior year is a 3.34 with a ACT of 28 (didn’t study). She will retake ACT in the fall after summer studying and tutoring in math, should hopefully get a least a 30. We are not trying to go to an Ivy but its hard to figure out if she is even got a chance to our local universities. There is no ap or honors classes at the school but every class is suppose to be harder than the local publics. Will find out in the next 6-8 months.
