High School GPA

Does hs gpa really matter? Because I recently calculated my gpa and its pretty bad.. 3.8 w 10-11 gpa. I've taken 10 APs, 9 AP classes and I have A's in all my AP classes and I've passed all of my APs. The reason why my gpa is so low is because I had a couple of bad experiences with teachers my junior year and I had some problems at home and as a result, got my first C's in subjects that I normally do well on. I'm writing about the situation in my UC essays, but will they just think that I'm smart and lazy because i have a low gpa but decent test scores?

You'll be fine. Relax.

thanks for the reassurement but its kind of hard for me because i'm applying to top ucs and pomona, my number one choice school which is considered the "Ivy of the West."

3.8 is a bad GPA only on CC. In the real world, it's good. If your SATs match your GPA, you'll be fine. Pomona's more selective than any UC other than Berkeley, but you should still be a competitive candidate there, too. Don't let the Type A hoop-jumping overachievers in CC intimidate you. I was serious about "relax."

For what it's worth, there is a LOT less difference in actual academic quality between the UCs than the average CC member would have you believe. Except for Merced, which is still building, the UCs at the undergrad level are going to be virtually identical (with the obvious difference in program offerings). Unless you have Chinese parents, it really just won't make much difference.

For Pomona it should be okay if you write great essays and recs and show some interest. I have no clue about the ucs though.

Clam down and relax. That GPA isn't bad.

don't worry about it. at least you've taken a ton of APs which shows u have initiative. ::sweatdrops:: i've only taken 4 total and my GPA's 3.9. Now that's kinda sad since it makes me seem lazy.
