I am a high school student very interested in international relations and I was wondering if there are many internships in the field of international relations. And also, are they more for college students than high school students?

Yes there are TONS of international relations-related internships. Most of them are for college students, but there are also plenty of international relations-related internships for high school students as well.

2 things: when I was in high school, my school had a “gifted mentorship” program. This is essentially an honors program that connected students with various employers for an unpaid internship for high school credit 5-10 hours a week. I was able to be placed in a World Affairs Council office. It was a great introduction to international relations as I got to see all these speakers talk about important global issues, as well as help out around the office. Definitely look into a similar program at your high school - or just randomly talk to various organizations in your area to see if any would be interested in taking on a high school volunteer intern.

Another thing: the summer between high school and college, I got accepted to a high school internship program with my US senator. A lot of US senators have high school internship programs; a lot of congressmen in general have positions available for “congressional pages” as well. Probably the easiest way as a high school student to get related internship experience is through a US or state congressperson. Even though it may not be exactly related to what you want to go in, it is great resume building experience for any person interested in poly-sci/international relations.

An idea for a high school student interested in international relations- look to see if your local Red Cross chapters does any work on Restoring Family Links. It is an aspect of the Red Cross that involves re-connecting family members around the world who have been separated due to war or disaster. They may be eager to have you as a volunteer, and it would help you learn more about things like International Humanitarian Law.
