Any possiblities for spring-summer internships involving Computer Science?

On of the kids that I went to high-school with did programming for the local police department. I don’t know how he got the job - might have been connections. If you have useful skills (doing web pages or simple applications), you could just try calling or visiting businesses to see if they have a need. You could ask your parents to see if there’s something that they could find in their network.

If your skills are very good, you could try Google’s Summer of Code. 2010 Summer isn’t out yet but I think that it will be by around February.

A lot of internships are aimed at College Students and college juniors at that as they want students that have a track record (they got through two or three years of college) and that have programming and some theory skills.

You could always just hop on an open source project too.

Just call businesses and ask what you can do. I was looking for an internship that I could do with my web design skills a while back. You just have to go and look yourself. Also, if there’s a local graphic design/web design/IT place where you live, you should just give them a call and tell them you’d be interested in interning. The worst they can say is no.

Harambee is more or less right on. If you have the time to devote to an internship search and have marketable skills that an employer is interested in such as web design or programming, then you can probably line up an internship on your own. You should be prepared for a lot of rejection, though. It is very helpful to have a few contacts in the industry that can help you get started with your search and put you in touch with hiring managers at firms.
