High School is stoopid rant series.

No, but seriously, I’m not a truant, I just think High School has gotten, or has always been, FUBAR. Feel free to add your HS is dumb rant, numbering it like so. C’mon. Blow off that steam.

I just think that I should be able to get to choose my classes from day one, and assuming they are of sufficient academic rigor, I should be able to take them. For example, I don’t give a flying **** about Spanish, but I am forced to take a language, I love chemistry and science, but I can’t double up until now (senior year), and for the love of god, Im sick and tired of english classes that aren’t open to multiple interpretations of literature, like most AP lit classes. Why is high school set up so that 75% of the classes are just redundant or not your area of interest? I know how I can get the most out of high school, the bureaucratic system just wont let me.

And good god, the sheer amount of boring ass things I’ve had to do just to be a viable applicant to HPYS, why does the college system assign value to stupid *ing things that everyone knows 10% of the people do because they want to. Like clubs, getting my * published in the newspaper, research, stupid summer courses and internships, really awesome sounding ones, where I just enter stuff into excel for five hours and dick around with dumb tasks to pass time, passing it off as passionate research. Why do colleges assign so much value to dumb things that are an indicator of how connected your parents are, because most internships happen that way.

And I won’t ***** about the SAT, because those tests are more fun that listening to my anal spanish teacher rant about verbs which I have to swallow and regurgitate to get an A which I need for my 3.8 UW. But so many studies have shown a positive correlation between income and score, FFS, I know life isnt fair, but colleges dont have to exacerbate it by assigning value to a test that most people who do well on buy a ton of books, lessons, tutors, etc.

Don’t you hate that one obsequeious friend of yours who always stays behind class to brownnose the teacher and make a jackass out of himself trying to get a good letter, BUT YOU KNOW INSIDE THAT THE REAL REASON YOUR TICKED IS BECAUSE YOU KNOW THAT HIS SUCKING UP MAY JUST HAVE WORKED.

Goddamnit, don’t you hate extravagant pep rallies for mediocre athletic teams? Sports is nice and all, but seriously, none of you will play it in college, go read a book, and stop being so pretentious. Im a state winning one man academic team, but no ones cares. Stupid flagship uni football coach getting paid 8 million a year. *** FUND YOUR RESEARCHERS AND SCIENTISTS AND ACADEMIC PROGRAMS, NOT FOOTBALL. YOU WONDER WHY AMERICA IS BECOMING AN INTELLECTUAL LAUGHINGSTOCK (or at least no longer the innovative epicenter it used to be)

This is a biggie. I hate teachers that go all nazi fascist on me about doing homework. If i can learn the class material without doing redundant ****, then live and let live. If we dont do it and fail, like college students do all the time, fine, so it goes. Seriously, these HS kids are becoming adults, let us make decisions about whether we do or dont do HW. Dont ruin our grade because we dont, let tests and quizzes be the indicator of whether or not we do our homework, and thus the incentive to do homework comes from the fact that if we don’t, we wont pass the test.

I hate people who yell at me for being un-PC. Goddamnit, I say what I want, and if I want to say that black people tend to play basketball, that statement is perfectly fine, because A) as my african american friend pointed out, its perfectly fine to refer to black people as black, since they may not necessarily be from africa in the past 8 generations, and if you compare the ratio of black college basketball players to the number of black college students, its a much higher ratio than white college bb players to white students. Statistics arent racist. They just arent. Stop trying to control my mouth, if you are offended, tell me why, and I will assess the statement and then if I understand how it actually can hurt, I wont say it. But seriously people, if you get offended, instead of whining, grow a pair and just deal with it, whether its about race, or just intelligence or stupidity. And Im not white. Just try to understand that if you apply basic intelligence to statements deemed unPC, you will find that they just statements.

I hate how this girl I really like when I was fourteen because she was so cute, intelligent and unslutty, turned into this uber ho-bag by the machine. Goddamnit, popularity corrupts.

I hate how the really rich kids at our school do stupid **** like flaunt their new hummer, leave the keys in the ignition with the window open during school day, find the car missing, and proceed to get daddy to buy them a new car. Goddamnit, your parents are CEOs and ****, does intelligence skip a generation?

Come on. I know someone wants to do eleven. Do it. Here’s an idea: what you think of the Great Gatsby or what you think about teachers who just dont appear to enjoy what they do.

11) Damn kids attending high school and then making damn rants about high school!

1) We all have schedule limits and requirements; we don't all go onto a college forum and harangue perfect strangers.
2) If you can't take the heat, get the **** out of the kitchen.
3) WHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE.
4) Do you ever think that some students might actually ENJOY talking to teachers? I talk to teachers whom I have no intention of getting recommendations from. Or are you so focused on the HYPS admissions game that you've ceased to enjoy learning entirely?
5) WHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE. I AM INCAPABLE OF UNDERSTANDING OTHER PEOPLE'S POINTS OF VIEW. PUT ME OUT OF MY MERCY.
6) Doing homework increases your grasp of the subject, even if you're Einstein - which based on this dialogue, honey, you sure aren't.
7) Go be a comedian, then, but try to actually say something worthwhile when you're doing it.
8) Look! I'm judgemental and deem my former friend a "ho bag" because I am without sin, thus I shall cast the stones! I'm better than everyone! I'm- hee-HAW. HEE-HAW. HEE-HAW.
9) So having money is a crime, then? And I thought you weren't politically correct.
10) DELETE MY THREAD AND BAN ME, PLEASE!!!!!!! I JUST WASTED 10 MINUTES OF MY LIFE BY TYPING THIS! LOL, I'M THE EPITOME OF EVERYTHING THAT I JUST DENOUNCED! HEE-HAW!

11) Thank you for giving me a legitimate reason to type a large part of a long message in capitals. Won't HYPS be proud of this fine young scholar and his/her tolerance and generosity towards all mankind?

And yet we know that while the moderators busy themselves by deleting "What's your favorite class?" and "Will Obama win?" and all of the other threads that actually hold some sort of interest and potential for discussion, they will pass over this incredibly pointless bombast without a second look. Do not ban me, oh great moderators, for I speak mostly in jest.

See, children? This is an example of why we do not type on public forums when we're angry; our outbursts only provide an excuse for other posters to give us the same bile at tens times the stength.

LOL wow, everyone has some hardships/issues in their life but...this post was so hilarious and praiseworthy that I couldn't help myself to systematically reply to each and every one of them (and I actually agree with some of them).

This I actually agree with, to a certain extent. I also think that you should be able to pick your own classes and take w/e the hell you want, but then I have nowhere close to a favorite subject but I hate/am apathetic to all subjects equally so...I don't really care.

Don't do those retarded things, if you don't to. It's true that 90%+, maybe more of HS students are disingenuous and do activities/EC's/community service just because it looks "good"...it's just another one of those things in life. I sure as hell have not done one legitimate EC yet, and I only plan to do a couple I like.

This has nerd written all over it.

The only thing that ever annoyed me was that football players can get their grade changed to allow them to play on gameday.

That is beyond ridiculous. Other than that, I like high school, just not the academic side.

At first I thought you were just had no brain cells, but because I actually do agree with 10% of what your saying, however obnoxiously, I will give this thread the attention that it clearly doesnt deserve.
1. Do you think the average HS student would pick the classes that were best for him? You might - many CCers would. And consider the economically depressed public schools we have, can they really afford to cater to each student like that?

If you dont have any better ideas about how to improve the college system, pipe down. It's not that bad. Oh, and I really liked the essay you sent to me for advice, it was very touching actually, so you have the ability to write better than this, and you clearly are very into the college process and are CHOOSING to do 10x more than your average peers. You chose to aim for HPYS - and I do think you have a chance from our PMs - so swallow the pill you prescribed yourself.

True. I agree. Your right. But its been said 1000x times, hasnt it? It's hackneyed to rant about SATs now.

I know what you mean, you will deal with much worse in college and work. Learn to swallow your angry thoughts, put a smile on, and impress. It will get you far when combined with intelligence.

I honestly agree with this. Not the insinuation that sports arnt important, because they are to some people what academics might be to you, and that is fine. I think many people would agree with you that we as a nation have the wrong priorities if you werent bent on offending people.

At SOME colleges, they have the same philosophy you have. Research them and attend a school that agrees with you on this. Many teachers at Stanford do, many don't. I had a great high school calc teacher who didnt teach to the BC test, didnt GIVE tests, didnt give HW, but was just so inspiring that we did the HW anyway and mostly got 5s and 4s on the test, but that was a long time ago. I know what you mean about this. It works with driven students and really good teachers.

I agree that probability is probability, not racist. But you will get far in life by trying not to offend people and just treading on the safe side. My advise is to be as unPC as you want with the people who you know agree with you - and many, many people do, and tread on the safe side with people you dont know. A lot of PC is hilarious, fine, but a lot of unPC is awful. And your telling people not to whine when they are offended, but your whining when your ****ed off?

You will meet so, so many girls in life, let the poor quality ones go. It's tough, watching a golden cup get tarnished and ruined, but just move on. Find a girl who goes on long rants, then you two can slam a variety of subjects as foreplay.

I agree. Its a fact of life that there will be people in life who you just want to punch really, really hard. But perhaps there is someone who wants to punch you really hard. So if you just let that person live, and he lets you live, then we both are fine.

ROFL. I usually refrain from dumb aol phrases, but LMAO. >abstinence-only-sex-ed too.

Yeah, I dont this the poster is being serious. If you look as some of his previous posts from a while back, he has given good advice and/or been a general decent person. Everyone needs to have their fun, and as immature as this is, there is truth here. Hilarity doesnt qualify pure obnoxiousness, but look, there's worse things you can be than skeptical and cynical about institutions.

I will add my own, just because I was perturbed by one thing when I was in HS.

The bending of rules to accomodate seniors and athletes, similar to what jptoor said. Many varsity soccer players did things that would have got little nerdy me expelled if I had done them, and got a slap on the wrist. For example skipping school was fine, unless you were the kid who didnt bring the school any recognition on the sports or arts fields.

Haha, I like how everybody is responding to his ranting point by point and not at all doing what he originally intended this thread to be for. :D

I don't think he wanted his post to be taken particularly seriously (he refers to his rant as "stoopid" and "dumb," for one) -- I seriously doubt that he is actually annoyed (to any great extent) by the things he listed; he probably just threw in a bit of exaggeration and hyperbole for humor's sake.

I personally haven't encountered very many of the OPs peeves, but the thing I dislike most is teacher incompetency (which thankfully is quite rare) -- hopefully college will provide for me better.

If we punch the people we want to punch, we are no longer slaves to social norms, we just have bloody noses, and I certainly think that's a better deal. I suppose this would be a bad time to ask you to read my next essay on my intellectual vitality and love of academics?

BeKRewind, don't you think all of CC has nerd written all over it?. Clearly that kid is mad that I am out-CCing them. Yes this does make me a hypocrite.

Actually, Moodrets, I am annoyed. I seriously do think Pailin = fail, and I am not in the least an Obama supporter - lesser of two evils - but I am really, really annoyed. And yes, teacher incompetency is a peeve of mine, but no so much, because worst comes to worst, you self teach and move on. My HS teacher, who retired from Vanderbilt to teach at his hometown school, says that every college has its share of incompetent teachers, who are exceedingly intelligent, but poor teachers who students loathe either because they dont know how to explain their knowledge or dont care enough to. I'm just saying what he said, I dont personally know.

Dunno who posted this, because I'm requoting Invoyagullible :], buuut it's totally incorrect... he says "High School is stoopid rant series." - meaning 'High school is stoopid' rant series. And then something like.. "your high school is dumb rant", but dumb is most definitely not modifying rant :]
