High School Lockers - an Endangered Species

@Yakyu Spirits:
Honestly, I’ve never seen any of that as a problem. The weather is never that extreme where I live that we need extra heavy coats or huge boots. Usually only girls carry umbrellas and they can just fit in their purse. As for the sports stuff, there are plenty of teachers that will let you keep it in their room.

never used my high school locker

which might be why my backpack is more duck tape than fabric…

My school has lockers since it has been around since the 60’s, but hardly anyone uses their locker as it is too inconvenient and you have to request one from the office. Most kids either lug around their stuff or put their athletic clothes in the Gym lockers or in their cars like most upperclassmen do. With only 7 minute passing periods and a pretty large school a locker is too burdensome. Good luck not getting stuck in 30 minute traffic after school if you do use one.

I love my locker even though I don’t use it a lot now. I keep my heavy jacket, music binder, and other things in there (extra pair of clothes) that I don’t need. I used it alot freshman year since my last class was always on freshman hall and I could just swing by my locker before and after that class. But I am hardly on sophomore hall now since I’m taking junior and senior level courses, but I run by it before and after school and before lunch. Lockers are pretty useful.

I don’t use my locker. I carry my coat around with me since sometimes classrooms are cold. Also, I tend to leave my coats in my locker lol. Lockers aren’t very popular in my school.

Wait, what? Since when are high schools not using lockers anymore? What are you supposed to do, carry 4 textbooks with you all day everyday? My school gives decent sized lockers to everyone in my school and everyone uses them.

Prevents scoliosis, man.

At my school lockers are big thing! People have multiple lockers and share lockers. We aren’t allowed to carry backpacks around so like keeping all those books around with you is really hard

We have lockers for every student, and virtually no one uses them, despite the best efforts of the administration. Because we have limited passing time and lockers are often on the other side of the school from any classes, most of us feel like it’s easier just to carry everything in a backpack.

I have no idea what I’d do without my locker. I go to it 5-6 times a day, since I have a notebook, folder, and sometimes binder or textbook for each of my seven academic classes, and also clothing for gym and sports, and during the winter - my coat.
Forget scoliosis, I’d have a hard time finding a backpack which wouldn’t rip!

My school has lockers, and most people use them. I keep coats/scarfs/extra boots there in the winter, backpack when I’m going off-campus, books for classes I don’t have right now, or don’t feel like carrying around. I use it less now as a senior than I did as a freshman or sophomore, but I still need it, especially for the ^ coat, etc . .

I go to it usually in the morning, in the middle of the morning, before/after lunch, and when I go home.

I’m from CT here so I get a fair bit of bad weather during the winter, nothing compared to Maine, but enough. We just carry our stuff around and deal with it. As for sports equipment, we have team lockers. I think there are 4 or 5 team lockers, split between the guys and the gals. Unfortunately, that means not all sports get lockers. I’m on the tennis team and I have to use the normal gym lockers. My huge bag can hardly fit into the tiny gym lockers :(. Oh well…

We’re in upstate NY and starting in 5th grade everybody has a locker and everyone uses it. In the winter, we get Lake Effect snow and heavy coats, boots, etc are a must even if they aren’t “cool”.

Each class requires, at times, multiple books, folders, notebooks, some a laptop, calculator and more.

During sports season, DD also has a full size sports locker in the locker room as she uses her own expensive sporting equipment such as her bat, cleets, glove, actually huge sports bags during softball and volleyball season.

In addition, she has a band locker, climate controlled, for the sake of many of the wooden instruments, including her $5000 oboe that needs to be protected.

at my school we have the half length ones (divided into a bottom and a top locker) and the ridiculous thing here is that they expect us to have “locker buddies” and share lockers with someone since there isn’t enough… the hell -.-

Being from Northern Minnesota, I can’t imagine I can’t imagine being a high school student and having nowhere to leave my winter coat during the day. We live in the snow belt now, just east of Cleveland… Same thought for the kids here.

only like 1/2 of the people at my school want a locker, you have a choice of getting one & my mom made me get one but i never use it!

I use my locker all the time & locker decor will never go out of style ;)

My school takes unusually good care of our lockers, now that I think about it. They get oiled every year and they’re pretty big.

I’ve had a locker since 3rd grade…they didn’t have locks, but they were still rectangular cubbies with doors made of metal, so they count  . Anyways, everyone got lockers.

In middle school, you weren’t allowed to carry around your backpack for some reason, (you actually legit needed a note to have it with you), so I used my locker around 3-4 times a day. You got a gym locker too and a hall locker. Everyone got lockers and they jammed a lot, so custodians/teachers with keys always ended up opening them for students.

At my old HS, you were allowed to have backpacks around, and you got hall and gym lockers (again). The locks were better and didn’t jam as much (HS is newer) but I still used it very little-I usually carried my coat around with me and all my books in my backpack. Still, it came in handy for those days when you have posterboard and stuff.

New HS: you can have backpacks and you have lockers. Some kids get half lockers and others ‘full’ ones. I have a full one but I have only opened it once this year. I actually forgot the combo and suck at opening the lock (for real), so I just awkwardly carry my stuff around or leave it in a classroom when a teacher’s there.

So, yeah.

The only lockers I ever had were for my PE classes in middle and high school. They gave us a tiny personal locker that would only fit our gym clothes, and a regular sized locker to share amongst others from different class periods for our backpacks, regular clothes, books, etc. At the end of our PE period, we had to take out all of our belongings from the bigger locker and put our lock back onto our small locker.

I never used my locker in high school. I always carried my books around with me. Plus, I couldn’t remember my locker combo anyway.

I forgot that I used one in high school. I can’t remember if I kept the same one all four years or if I had a new one each year.
