High school newspaper

Hi everyone! I’m not sure where to post this, but I hope someone will see it. I am currently the EIC of my school’s newspaper and I love it. It can be really, really stressful and especially because getting the job was a big surprise, I’m still learning a lot. Anyways, I wanted to start a thread if anyone else wants to talk about their experience with this role (or high school journalism in general).

That’s super cool! Congrats on your position!

I’m currently a member of my school’s lit mag, which is a club, and sadly we don’t have positions like editor in chief. But I am the 2nd longest standing member currently there. My school has a good newspaper and I’ve debated about joining it, but it’s a class rather than a club… and not sure I want to risk giving up AP science in my schedule (they are 2 periods at my school) even though I don’t see myself as a hardcore STEM major. Anyways, I’m conflicted

What was your story when it came to joining? And what have you learned?

@isla701 Aw thank you! That’s so cool—I’m also on my school’s literary magazine. You should totally stick with it and even with the title, you’ll still learn how to be a leader

I’m not really a big STEM person either, though I do like math and science. I started newspaper sophomore year because we have two elective periods and I decided to keep doing Spanish but not band, so I had an open spot. I love that it’s a class–it keeps people accountable but we can also do a lot more. I hated my band director but I didn’t want to stop music unless I had something else to do, and since I love to write, I decided to apply for the newspaper.

I’ve learned how to talk to strangers and how to get the most out of talking with people. I’ve also learned how to manage a large group of people. I’ve come to love editing, too!

@green2023 Oh cool!! Has your school entered any national lit mag competitions? My school’s club is smallish, but last summer I went to a camp and got immersed in the world of the top lit mags in the state (okay there are only like 3 but still). I love how chill lit mag is, but that won’t help us get into that realm of recognition… I’m stuck trying not to be too pushy but also get my ideas out. Anyway! XD

That is how I feel about STEM too. We have three electives starting sophomore year after the PE requirement is done, but I decided to fill my third elective besides orchestra and French with AP World. There are just not enough periods in the day sometimes. I’m sorry about your band director. I don’t think I would ever quit orchestra personally- my director is fabulous.

Haha yes I absolutely love peer editing in English! I suppose I will think about this more as I think about my preferred schools. I’m not sure how competitive I want to go, and I think my ECs are pretty weak for places with acceptance rates in the 20s… sighs
