I’m doing a project where I want to build a model (and possibly create an app) that predicts whether a high school student or a transfer student gets accepted to Cal Poly given by his/her stats based on the question “What are my chances?”
@Daan00, it’s an ambitious and noble project, but it is unlikely to yield real results unless you ask ALL the right questions. I tried to cut and paste the survey, but couldn’t open it. There are so many non-academic ways to get points, that you can’t build a predictive model on typical “chance me” stats alone. If you include those questions too, it would be more accurate. Again, they might be there. I couldn’t open it to verify one way of the other. Good luck with the project.
EDIT: I did get it open. Many of the questions are not germane to admissions or asked incompletely. For instance, are you the first to go to college has no bearing on CP admissions. However, if either or both parents didn’t complete high school, that’s hugely relevant. Similarly, awards, not part of the admission algorithm. If you’d like some suggestions on how to modify it, feel free to PM me. Also, disregard the result that came through just after 10:40 pm. I had to go through to view the questions and like a dork, hit submit. Dooh!
