High School Quota?

I was accepted Early Decision at another school, but never got around to withdrawing from UNC, because for a while it honestly didn't cross my mind and then I figured I was supposed to have a backup school anyway, in case my grades dropped and William and Mary didn't want me anymore or something. Anyway, I was accepted and now certain kids at my school are soooooo mad, saying I took their spot. Traditionally though, UNC takes 2 kids from my public Maryland high school, and this year they took 4. So my question is, does UNC have high school quotas, where they would have taken the next most qualified senior from my high school had I withdrawn on time? Or would it go to another qualified applicant in the pool at all? Or even to anyone- do they just accept if you meet certain criteria?

Wildflower, when you received your ED admission, the letter probably told you to withdraw all other applications, and that is what you are supposed to do right away. However, there is no way of predicting if someone else at your school would have been accepted to W&M in your place, if you had withdrawn on time. Or even if anyone else in the entire applicant pool would have either. But think about this, what if 100 or more of W&M applicants applied ED elsewhere and forgot to withdraw their WM apps; that would certainly have an effect on the applicant pool.

just so you dont think im too horrible, the letter didn't say anythign about withdrawing other applications, nor did it say that on my actual application. i guess its just sort of understood, but that sort of made me think it wasn't that important, which i get now. why wouldnt they have made it a bigger deal? anyways, thanks for responding.

What high school?

i highly doubt they have high school quotas. they just accept the best people from wherever.

From the Fall 2003 Newsletter to high school counselors: "Have you heard this rumor? Of course you have. It's not true, but it's very persistent. No, there is no quota or any other kind of limit on admitting students from certain North Carolina counties or cities. There is no quota on the number or percentage of applicants we admit from any particular high school. There are no gender or ethnic quotas. The only quota is that imposed by the Board of Governors on the percentage of out-of-state freshmen we may admit (18% of the freshman class). That is the only quota. Anything else is just not true! Please help us squelch the rumor!"

I guess the quota rumor persists because it's the only explanation when stronger applicants from schools where many apply are turned down, and seemingly weaker applicants are admitted from "out-lying" areas in the state.

How about this...
You got accepted EA to UNC. If someone from your HS was strong enough of a candidate to begin with, he/she would've been deferred, not rejected. If there is a quota (and I don't think there is one), that deferee will take your spot when you go to W&M. However, if I was in your shoes, I'd withdraw my UNC application now (or I guess now you just have to decline admission).

First off. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A HIGH SCHOOL QUOTA

and finally: YOU ARE NOT TAKING THE SPACE OF ANYONE, if they were qualified they would have gotten accepted. just go to school in a carolina blue shirt and tell them to P iss off.

My son was accepted ED to Wm & Mary and he was definitely informed to withdraw other applications within two weeks of receiving the financial aid assessment.
