i’m in the top 20% of my school out of a class of 780 with a gpa of 93, is that good and if so how good?
Whoa… Your gpa is lightyears better than anyone else in the United States.
Currently 121 out of 499 with a GPA of 3.43, i’m terrible compared to everyone else on this site.
Yes.
@phantomlink I have a 3.33 (UW, I think) so I know how you feel.
what grades are you guys in, cuz i’m currently a senior and currently, internally beating myself up for not applying myself in school. i would’ve gotten so much higher if i actually tried, right now i’m grade grinding so i can boost my gpa.
@newjerseygirl98 Well I actually have a 3.0 unweighted but since I’ve taken all honors classes I got an extra 0.5 added on for each class bringing me to a 3.43 weighted.
I’m 8/183 with a 3.86 unweighted and 4.45 weighted GPA. I feel like weighted GPA varies wildly between different schools.
^^^ Weighted GPA does vary wildly between schools, but so does the unweighted GPA. Some schools have serious grade inflation, while others follow a “normal” distribution. The caliber of the “average student” varies quite a bit between schools as well, as do the available course offerings. A 93% average, putting you in the top 20%, is of course, generally very respectable. Depending on your other qualifications/EC’s, etc. it may put you in the running to have some great college choices down the road.
What matters is whether you are doing your best, and are taking courses that are appropriate for you. Colleges will look at your transcript and your High School Profile, and will weigh them in their magical formula to determine whether or not to admit you, and/or potentially how much Financial Aid or merit aid you might get.
Where you aim, of course, is up to you. I wouldn’t expect that your grades/rank are high enough to get you into the elite schools like HYPS, but depending on your standardized test scores, and your essay, you may have a decent shot at a very very good, even a great school.
Keep up the good work.
I would just like to mention, it is possible to get into the Ivy Leagues with those stats, look at Cal Newport’s books… Plenty of people have made Ivies without straight 4.0s.
2/89, 3.9 unweighted, 4.4 weighted. I’m in my junior year, but I don’t go to a public high school. Instead I’m at a high school program at my local community college
Not everyone at an Ivy is a val/sal - but there are very very few not in the top10% of their graduating class. But the Ivy schools are not the only places where you can get a great education, and get great merit aid.
And of course, there is a fair amount of difference between HYPC and the other Ivies
I’m 3.75 UW and I’m top 40% of ~580…
4.12 Weighted, Ranked 19 out of 300… Could be better, but at this point I think I’m alright.
My 4.46 weighted and 3.88 unweighted GPA puts me in the top 5% of my class of slightly fewer than 200 students. I feel like this stuff varies wildly from school to school.
