How does high school ranking play into college admissions? Recently, the Washington Post ranked my highschool(public) as the 3rd most challenging high school in the state, following a IB school and a magnet school. I was just curious about how this sort of stuff plays into admissions. Do colleges care about what U.S. New, Washington Post, or anyone else says? These were apparently based on the number of students taking AP, IB, and AICE classes and exams(however, we only offer AP).
Either way, exciting news for a school that was built less than four years ago!
( my class is the first class to go through all four grades there! pretty sad about leaving)
Honestly, I don’t think it does much. My high school is ranked super low but it’s urban and inner city so our students get special consideration because of that. We send an average of 5-7 kids to Ivies every year, with countless more going to top tier colleges and Ivy equivalents.
Meanwhile, kids in the school across the way from us are ranked higher but less get special consideration and less go to Ivies. Puts things in perspective, I guess.
I don’t think it matters at all. The school my brother goes to is ranked in the top 10 in the nation, and the school I went to is not at the same level. But my school gets bigger percentages going to Ivy Leagues and top-tier schools in comparison to my bro’s. It’s all about how well you do in your high school circumstances.
Anyone know where/how I can find my high school’s ranking?
If your college has challenging classes available, then it doesn’t really matter because within your own school, whether its a very good school or an okay school, you can choose a variety of classes (very challenging or very basic).
