High School Record/Sophomore transfer

I will be attending Florida International University in the fall and plan to transfer out for sophomore or junior standing at another school. I did not perform so well for the majority of high school, and was therefore denied from my colleges of choice. I will be finishing my senior year with 5 As and 3Bs, 4 AP classes (all As). My question is, would I have a better shot at getting in to my schools of choice as a sophomore or junior? As a junior, there will be less focus on my high school record and I have no doubt that I will maintain a stellar GPA (I'm beyond motivated!). As a sophomore, there will be more focus on high school... but that last year will show an upward trend.

So, should I stay at FIU for two years or do I have a decent shot as a sophomore applicant? I am looking to reapply to some of my past reaches as well as some new schools: NYU, Hamilton (was surprisingly deferred before being rejected, don't know if that was because I interviewed and did ED2), FSU, Hampshire, Amherst, UMass, Sarah Lawrence (currently on the waitlist, will reapply if I don't make it in this year), along with some matches or safeties if I can stop reaching for the stars for a moment.

Is there anyone else in the same situation? Hello?

My mom is always tell me to just “cross the bridge when you get there”…I get tunnel vision when my expectations are too high.

"If you’re applying for sophomore standing more emphasis will be placed on your high school record than if you apply for junior standing. "

This was the basic response received when I visited Columbia, Barnard, NYU, UPenn, Boston College and Boston University in March and April.

I guess I’m trying to make up for the lack of foresight I had as a freshman in high school, where I really thought I’d cross the bridge when I got there. I guess I should apply as a junior then. Living at home and going to this school for two more years sounds so dreadful, though.

Thanks, EgoSurfing

I know the feeling…I said I would never go to MDC (and I am)…that’s what’s keeping me from even considering the U. I was raised a 'Cane. I can’t help but feel that I’ll stay living with the folks like all my friends have done. XD

One last question for anyone out there. If I were to transfer as a second semester freshman, would colleges see my first semester grades at all or just my high school grades? I’m most interested in Hampshire, and would like to know if transferring as a second semester freshman would be a good idea. According to collegeboard they receive about 200 transfer apps and admit about half, so it doesn’t seem impossible.

By the way, does anyone have any advice on Hampshire? Or should I make a thread in the college’s forum?

Falling off the first page here, anyone?

Checkout the deadlines:
Spring 2011
Deadline: November 15, 2010
Notification: December 15, 2010

FIU Fall semester doesn’t end 'till about that same time: Dec. 15-ish.
They’ll probably end up relying on your high school rec and Instructor Progress Reports.

Hampshire seems like a great school. I mean really super cool. Yes, I looked it up on Wikipedia, lol. What do you see yourself majoring in?

Well, they don’t really have majors (at least it doesn’t sound like they do) but I’d concentrate on creative writing and a bit of french. I emailed a rep today asking if the upward trend in my last year of high school plus a progress report from my first semester would be enough, lets see what he says.

I hope you hear back soon! Good Luck!

I know you’d probably hate to hear this, but

GO GOLDEN PANTHERS!!!
