High School Semester Abroad?

Hi! I was wondering what the pros and cons were of going a semester abroad? and what are your experences with it? Also have you heard of the company called CIEE, have you heard of it?
I would be going 2nd semester (so I would leave end of Jan) of my sophmore year. I would be going to Australia. Also would this affect college admisions anyway? I have to make my decision soon so let me know thanks!

CIEE has been around a long time but you should definitely research any program before deciding to go with it. There are many, many pros to going abroad - whether in high school or college. Life experiences that will last a life time and you might not be able to take advantage of post-college. Cons? If you can complete your high school’s graduation requirements I can’t see any with the exception of not being able to take AP exams in May if you’re currently taking any AP courses - which as a sophomore you might not be. A study abroad program could definitely be something that sets you apart from all the other applicants, too. I would talk to your high school guidance counselor as well to ask them for their input. High school counselors frequently match students to abroad programs and will know of reputable organizations. There are also many, many great summer abroad programs you might want to consider as well. My oldest went on a program run by Abbey Road Programs and my next child will be going during summer 2012 on the same program. I have nieces and nephews who have also spent summers away using Experiment in International Living that they enjoyed as well and thought were great experiences.
