Totally waste of time!
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/memphis-high-school-senior-accepted-to-147-colleges-offered-over-7-million-scholarships/
I’m not even opening that link. Ridiculous.
@3scoutsmom Totally agree!!! A straight A student applying to 147 schools to increase her chances!?!?! The college counselor is really the person who should have directed her with a more sane narrower path, instead of making this student take a misguided path of nearly applying to every college, and yes totally wasting her time. Seems the list of colleges mention are all schools easier than a reach school for this bright student.
Wow, that’s a lot of money spent on application fees – not to mention how much time her guidance counselor must have spent sending transcripts and reports to all those schools.
what a frigging waste of $$ and time.
for what? glory??
=))
@dustypig The article mentions that all the schools she applied to did not require an application fee… Nonetheless, a total waste of time for the admission committee to waste time on this applicant, who is applying to schools she would have and did get accepted just by practically sending in an application with just her name.
@menloparkmom – mention in record books?
She mainly applied to schools without application fees. Not only does the charter school condone applying to so many schools, it sounds like they encourage it with the “honors” they bestow on kids who get $1million+ in financial aid offers.
What is the point? It’s not like she can take advantage of $7M+ in financial aid. By giving the kids a huge fake check at graduation, the charter school is sending the message to parents and other kids that college applications are like a lottery and they will get an actual check for that amount if they just apply to enough schools.
Wow. I guess the charter school’s goal was reached - get a news article about itself.
I still think it is ridiculous how this school and it’s college counselor have misguided this student to reach a silly goal just to promote themselves.
I knew someone would eventually break my record of 148.
How much do you want to bet some of that $7M is the same Pell grant counted over and over as each school ‘awarded’ it? Can you imagine what her FAFSA file looks like, with 10 schools dropped and 10 more added over and over? Good use of resources.
And she only applied to the ones she was interested in.
Now it’s time for 149 college visits because she can’t decide. :))
So instead of taking the time to help this 4.0 student create a meaningful list of reaches, matches and likelies, helping her to apply for fee waivers, and talking with her about which schools would best fit her goals this college counselor is spending all her time sending off transcripts to random schools and verifying and recording meaningless scholarship offers? Pathetic.
7 million/4 years/149 schools = 11,700 per year of aid average.
Really…$12000 a year or less? She should have honed her applications down to ones where her full cost of attendance might have been met. Wondering if the school she is considering does this.
I agree, OP. Why would anyone apply to so many schools? Nonsense.
This angers me. That student wasted time and resources, and possibly caused some other student to be denied a place. What a total waste of time. Greedy and selfish.
Totally stupid. Not only waste his/her own time, it waste time of 100+ adcoms. The GC of his/her school should be blamed too, They should not even allow that to happen.
How is she still deciding which school to attend? The sad part is that despite the 7M fake check she probably didn’t get full aid anywhere and will struggle to pay.The GC is to blame here as far as I’m concerned.
