hey everyone i'm a senior in high school right now and i'm not quite sure what school to go to so i wanted to know if any of you had any suggestions? i want to go into computers...maybe like 3d design or working for a video game company or something along those lines. the only problem is that i probably have a 2.0 gpa. i'm planning on going to a community college for 2 years to get pre-reqs done. to be honest, no one has ever really fully explained the whole college thing to me. please, if anyone can help, respond.

well considering the date and your gpa, community college sounds like your best bet. you could try to go to a technical school but i just dont like those (thats just me though). most community colleges that i know of actually have pretty decent computer and graphics programs and if you work hard and keep your grades up you should have no problem transfering into a respectable university to finish up your b.s.

yeah that's what i was thinking. so do my high school grades in all honesty really matter? another question, my cousin told me that there are some schools like ucla or some other ones in the L.A. area (california) have to accept you by law, does anyone know if this is true? and do i need to take my SAT's to get into community college?

you dont need to take the SAt's to get into community college.....most require you to have a HS diploma or GED though

re. some schools in CA like UCLA having to take students "by law." That isn't exactly accurate.

I am assuming that you are in CA. In CA there are three levels of public education available to CA students after graduation from high school.

The first is the community college which is a great option for all kinds of students and are noncompetitive. What that means is that anyone can go. CCs do offer an admissions gurantee with the UC system but only if, while at the CC, the student maintains a certain GPA and earns their AA degree.

The second level is the California State University system. These schools are more selective than the Community Colleges. But, providing a CA student meets the GPA and Test score requirements, they are guranteed admission into a CSU. It may not be the one they want, but they can get in somewhere.

The most selective of the CA publics is the University of California system. That's where you find UCLA, Berkeley, UC San Diego etc. They also have a gurantee of admission if you meet the GPA and Test score requirements but those requirements are harder to achieve than the CSU requirements. Like the CSU system, you don't neccessarily get your first choice campus but you can get into one of them.

I hope that helps you figure out your options

The due date for most college apps have past and with a 2.0 GPA you will most likely not get into anywhere respectable even if you apply the following year, so just stick with community college. Lots of people have done community college and have still been successful.

There are some CSUs still acccepting apps through March...I know Monterey is. But unless you have some killer SAT scores to overcome the 2.0 you should plan on spend a couple of years at a CC and then transfering.

If you were my kid I would encourage you to start looking into the California Community Colleges. Find one that is interesting to you and start looking into attending it in the fall. Some have dorms so you can still get that dorm experience if you want it. Another thing to remember is that after you graduate from a 4 year school you will have a degree that will help you either further your education more or get a job. None of the graduate schools or employers will know or even care that you started at a CC. Good Luck!

Got to a CC for two years, do well, and transfer to RIT where they have a major in computer gaming.

If you go to cc also look at UCSC. They have the gaming major.

thank you for all of your responses. it really helped me out :) i had another question though. does anyone know of any international schools that have something with 3d design or video game design? i was also thinking of maybe just doing advertising for some company, but i don't know what that's called. thanks again everyone!

Calciumwaves, I don't know anything about schools overseas, but I wanted to mention that Columbia College in Chicago may be worth a look if you are interested. Its a liberal arts school that has the video game major along with radio, tv, film, music and other majors that you might be interested in. It pretty much specializes in those areas but has other majors also. Its very good with admissions also. Check out their website or on college board. Good luck!
