High school senior Pre-med

Hi, i am currently an arising senior and very interested in taking the pre-med route. I need suggestions on good schools, I should look into and perhaps apply. my parents and I goal is to go to the best school as possible for low cost, they don’t want me struggling with debt especially wanting to go to med school. However, they did make a claim that if the school is prestigious enough they will be willing to pay. I am a NY resident, please suggest schools or programs (b/md) for me

GPA - 4.0 (number 5 in my grade and within the top 3% of my grade)
SAT - 1440 (98th percentile on june 2018 SAT, roughly curved)
AP Classes - ap euro, apush, ap lang, ap lit, ap bio, calc
Sports - 4 years of varsity golf, multiple awards
Member of National Honor Society

Extracurricular Activities

  • Heavily involved in charity events through multiple clubs in school and out of school.
  • Student Council
  • Tutoring
  • Multicultural Club
  • Participant and volunteer in Leukemia Walk for 7 years

Medical experience

  • hospital volunteer
  • worked in a pharmacy
  • scribed for 3 doctors
  • shadowed about 4 doctors (ophthalmologist, anesthesiologist, emergency ped)
  • viewed multiple surgeries the doctors invited me into
  • very experienced in ophthalmology
  • volunteered at two ophthalmology offices since freshman year: did numerous of jobs such as registering surgeries, eye tests, assisting doctors and technicians
  • now working for one of these offices over the summer

You and your family need to do more research on the criteria that Med Schools use for admission. “Prestige” of undergrad school is not one of these. Maybe talk with a few doctors that your family knows or in the community. Best wishes to you.

@snarlatron By prestige, I mean the ivies or boderline ivies. All the doctors I have talked to said that if I were to get accepted into an ivy or close to that, don’t worry about the money because the connections you make are worth it. I am very aware of how low my chances are at getting accepted into one of these schools, that’s why i’m asking for suggestions of schools that offer great opportunities to pre meds and has a low cost by giving me a scholarship or just a low tuition in general. My family is very aware MCAT, GPA and other factors play the biggest role in med school admissions, that’s why we are looking to save the most money possible in undergraduate.
