I am currently a high school senior and I am looking for some internships or summer programs to do in the summer before I leave for college. Does anyone know of any such programs or internships specifically in the summer, paid or no pay, that I can participate in?

I actually recommend getting a “real” job if you haven’t had one…I think it gives good real-world experience plus it looks less fluffy on a resume. And when an employer asks you what you did there you can give a more substantial answer than “making photocopies at a lawfirm.”

Agreed. As a rising freshman in college you have more freedom than you ever will have again with regard to jobs. You could choose to do the internship route, but that will give you a heck of a lot of difficulty since most substantial internships are reserved for rising seniors in college (but hey you never know!). Unpaid internships are most likely, but I agree with mochamaven that it is probable that an “internship” is just another way of calling it a lame job that few people would actually enjoy.

If I were you, I’d get a summer job. Work at a camp or a fast food joint, be a bank teller, get your certification and be a lifeguard, something like that. Honestly, your best bet in my opinion is starting to work at a restaurant. If you’ve never done it before, apply as a food runner or a busser (it’d be tough to get a server job with no experience), but eventually try to be a server or a bartender. That is the type of experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life, and you will never be unemployed against your will. I worked in the restaurant industry for five years during high school and college, including four summers as a server, and in that time, it is impossible to not make connections such that if I ever lose my job, I know I can get a job waiting tables at a fancy pants restaurant while I’m in between jobs so that I don’t fall into debt.
