High School Senior thinking of community college

NOTE: This is from my chance thread, I'm just copy-pasting to make it quicker. I have a question at the bottom about going to a community college. I want to major in economics, and while I might get into a good school, its econ program will likely be not as strong as UC Berkeley HAAS (my ultimate goal)

California Community Colleges! Save money, be happy anddd transfer

Question, by the time I graduate senior year, I'll have alot of AP's under my belt. If I do decide on going to a community college with the intention of transferring to LA or Berkeley, will they take my AP credits? Will this make it quicker for me to transfer? If I don't get accepted to LA or Berkeley, which I think is highly likely in my case, I'm definitely going to a community college.

Haas is a business program. If you want an econ program, that is not Haas but Berkeley also has a very good econ program.

^ yea, I mean Berkeley econ with the hopes of going Haas junior year. If I don’t get into Berkeley or LA, ill think of cc.

bump 10char

Berkeley economics is in the College of Letters and Science (L&S); all freshmen entering L&S enter undeclared. Freshmen do not enter the Haas School of Business Administration; students apply in their sophomore year to transfer to it as juniors.

Note that economics is a capped major, and requires applying to declare, unlike most majors in L&S which can be declared after completing the prerequisites.

Economics is not the same as business, although business uses economics. Economics at Berkeley also has a “more math” track for those intending to go to graduate school in economics, and a “less math” track for other students.

^ Thanks! So my goal is to get into Haas as a transfer

UCBalumnus, I got into Berkeley for economics and was obviously instead accepted to L+S. I have a 3.9ish gpa with a 4.0 major gpa so far and will hopefully maintain that with the required (2) prereqs left at Berkeley. Is it a safe bet that I will get accepted into the econ major? Thanks in advance.

I got into haas as a transfer but in high school my gpa was like 2.0. (SAT score was 2250 though). Seriously, don’t go to community college if you are doing well in high school.

You’ve got some pretty good academics and extra-curriculars, and I think that you will likely be able to get into Davis, BU, and UW, and maybe SD. The others I’m not sure. But commnity college is definitely a good option especially if you are interested in saving money. However, I do have to that I agree with Investment on how hard you’ve worked in high school because its hard to get that back.
Oh and btw you mentioned toward the end about AP credit, most community colleges I think will take it if you got at least a 3 so you get units for it, I know mine does it that way. You have so many APs that could knock out some G.E.s of college work that could bring you closer to 60 units faster. Although I am not sure how it will show up on your transcript if you transferred like if a letter grade will appear for it or not.
Either way you go should be good, but my recommendation is community college if you really are set on Berkeley and don’t get in as a freshman first time around.
