College Choices (regardless of finances)
1st: NYU
Michigan Based: Grand Valley, don't know much else really

The things I need feedback most on
-How to improve ECs
-Good colleges with film/photography/good liberal arts courses that are relatively inexpensive
-SCHOLARSHIPS!
-My chances of the colleges listed above, especially NYU. I'm still searching.
-Anything else.

If you bring your GPA up to 3.75, I’m sure you’ll have no problem going to NYU with film/performing arts. Unlike other majors, performing arts & film place ECs as one of the most important admission factors. So I would like to recommend you to join performing clubs, such as drama clubs.
You have to show that you are different that others. How are you different? What makes you different? If you can answer these questions confidently, I’m sure you’ll have no such problems applying to your college choices.

I think the main problem with NYU wouldn’t be so much getting in as paying. Besides, my parents want me to stay in state for undergrad.

Anyways, as far as clubs in our school go, there aren’t all that many for creativity. The art kids have friends and all, but besides in class, tend to go solo on their projects and such (unless it’s film). I was considering NHS, but then I realized I wanted a social life. Maybe some volunteer work could factor in, or a film/photo internship. I’ve been trying to look at those, but living in metro Detroit, there aren’t a whole lot of options.

Just my opinion- if you can’t find an interesting club, why don’t you make one? I actually wrote my college essay about making a club (well, a rock band) at highschool with less than 200 people.

Where are you going right now? -is curious-

Seriously though, making a rock band sounds AWESOME. Me and a couple of my friends wanted to start up a film club, but there wasn’t enough interest and our film teacher (who would have to be the sponsor) is undergoing a lot of personal problems right now, so he can’t devote the time.

May consider a photography/film club next year, though.

I’m high school senior who’s about to go to University of Miami w/20k scholarships. Got accepted to NYU, BU, Penn State University Park, Syracuse, and Northeastern. My scores weren’t great either. 1840 SAT, 3.93/4.00UW, rank #1. I believe that my college essay and my ECs really helped me a lot, since this 2011 has been the most competitive year for applicants.

I was a treasurer of student council, went mission trip to Malaysia & Philippines, some volunteer work at hospital, and um… i can’t think a lot right now except I was a vice-captain for soccer team.

I’ll chime in from a recent GVSU graduate. With your stats you would be in at GVSU for sure. As for undergrad GV would be a good choice, as I’m pretty sure our film/video program is pretty good, but not nearly as good as a NYU or USC. As for thinking about NYU its a great school and all, but it is EXTREMELY expensive. I remember reading a story about a girl from NYU who graduated with a sociology degree from NYU and could not find a job and had $200,000 worth of loans. Of course, not everyone graduates with that much debt, but its something to think about. You could try and do well at GVSU or another Michigan in state and try and go to NYU or USC for graduate school.

How much do AP scores themselves affect colleges looking at you? In my APUSH class, I have always been in the A/B range, but I did very poorly on the AP test on Friday, due to a lot of stress factors and the insanely difficult (well, for me) essay questions…
