High school student wanting to do science research-- help?

I want to go to a prestigious school for physics. I've heard that it is a great idea to publish science research while still in high school. I am in 10th grade, and I would like to do science research in the near future, perhaps to submit to a science competition like Siemens.

However, I attend a small high school in a small town. How do I do research by myself? I am pretty sure I need a mentor. Who do I look for as a mentor? Local university professors? The nearest university, SUNY Cortland, is probably full of teachers who don't care about doing real research.

Are online and long distance mentors an option?

How do I overcome this small-town obstacle? I'm sure if I lived in Boston or something there would be so many people willing to help me achieve my goals...

Thank you very much.

If you really want exposure and maybe start a project, start by emailing college professors.

If you are very strong academically, there are summer programs you can do such as RSI and SSP however they are extremely selective but worth a shot if you have very strong stats and can write very good essays/responses.
