Hi,
I have a problem. During my freshmen year of high school I took regular biology because it was a graduation requirement. Unfortunately my bio teacher taught AP Bio style and tested us on ap bio stuff on the final which screwed me over and I ended with a C+. In 10th grade when I took regular chemistry I was able to end with a B first semester. And now for my senior year I really want to take Honors anatomy and physiology but my counselor is saying that I cant take it because I need a B or better in biology and B or better (I got a C in bio) and in chem (which I already got a B) . My counselor won’t let me do anything but the reason I want to take Honors Anatomy and Phsyiology is because I want to go into the medical field… My counselor is really strict. Can anyone give me any suggestions on how she can give me an exception for this course that I absolutely love. I am also going to be a senior and this is my last year in high school. I really need this class and some ideas to convince my counselor to be able to take this class…
Thanks.
Have you spoken to your counselor about all this? Although counselors may seem strict, they - more often than not - have your best interests in mind. It may be better to just be truthful with her and express all of what you just said. Tell her about your desired career path, and how you wish to explore and take a class that will allow you to expand your interests! Also, make sure to tell her that you’ve grown since freshman year and that you believe your personal interest in conjunction with hard work will allow you to succeed. Generally, they’re not trying to screw you over. Just make sure to stress the depth of your personal passion for medicine and associated fields, and that you hope this might make you more competitive for colleges as well. There isn’t really a correct answer for this. Best thing to do might just be to talk to her.
Just make sure you appeal in person. Do you think you can talk to your old Biology teacher? If yes, see if you can get him/her to support your decision and back you up in taking A&P. Otherwise, parent reinforcement can also do wonders if all else fails.
What science did you take junior year?
Explain you had an A (or a B+ or whatever your grade was before the final, it may appear on your internal transcript and if so point to it) in biology but just messed up the final because there were some AP style questions you weren’t ready for. The fact remains that you didn’t master a lot of the biology content so it’d make A&P difficult and you’d need to seriously review everything over the summer (Khan academy, crash course biology). But if you did well in your junior year science class plus the B in chemistry, could be enough to convince your GC. Don’t underestimate the time commitment over the summer then during the week senior year.
However I assume you could also take A&P regular, which would help you also, and may not be as hard - if you got a B in chemistry honors it’s one thing but if you got a B in chemistry regular, switching to regular would be mean a risk of getting less than a B. It’s good you want to challenge yourself but measure the risk and whether you’re ready/able to give the time commitment.
What other classes would you take senior year?
I took Biotechnology ROP accelerated and research for my junior year (current). This also requires biology and chemistry but doesn’t require the B in chemistry and biology. Just completion.
I am thinking of asking one of my parents, to support me in this battle against my counselor and hopefully they will give in to the interests that I have as a student.
And yes I did talk to her but she keeps bringing up that one requirement and shutting me down. I have talked to her before this post, but there isn’t much they are doing. I am going to try all of your suggestions in hope she will give in and let me take the class I want during my last year of high school. Thanks for all the kind suggestions
Hi, thanks all for your suggestions. I was able to get into Honors Anatomy
which I am thrilled about :))
Where we live parents can appeal any course placement and override the school going up or down in rigor within a set timeframe for required classes. In terms of overriding rules set by the school get your parents involved and email the principal. I have bypassed rules being insistent and going up the chain of command articulating the why.
Congratulations
Now you must seriously review biology since you didn’t master a lot of stuff from freshman year, this way you’ll be all ready when th class starts. (Keep in mind all other students had As or B’s in both biology and chemistry so you want to level up before the class starts).
I recommend watching the ‘crash course biology’ videos on YouTube they’re fun and very well done, as well as checking out Khan academy.
