High School student with questions

Hey, everybody!

I am a senior in HS and have just finished my apps. My father is an anesthesiologist and says that undergrad it not as important as grad (med) school is. So, my question is, is this really true?

Another question I have is if there are any websites that list all the different specailities of the medical field? And does anybody know where I can volunteer? The reason is that I am not quite sure why I want to become a doctor, besides the rep. and $ issue. I want to help people in suffering but I am somewhat a little freaked out by the inside of humans and how hard and demanding a medical profession is. I want to have every possible exposure to see if a medical carrer is one for me.

THANKS

Here's one way to find a list of specialties on the web:

Look at your own health insurance card.

Go to the web site; they'll let you search for doctors covered under their plan by specialty. You'l probably need your own member ID number to do this.

I wouldn't say college is any less important than med school, since you do have to go to college (and do reasonably well in your pre-med courses) to get into medical school. They're both necessary ifyou're going to become a doctor.

There's a "Discovery Health" channel on TV that does a lot of documentaries on medical practice that will give you a pretty graphic and realistic look at life in the medical field. There's a genre of books by doctors - one in the 60's called "The Making of a Surgeon" that I read when I was a kid, another called "The making of a Female Surgeon" more recently, and one called "The Making of a Psychiastric" published in 1985.

Hey,

Thanks to both of you and thanks for the info.
