high school student wondering about FSU

I am taking an AP English class in High School, which if i score high enough on the AP exam will give me college credit for ENC 1101 and possibly ENC 1102. My guidance counselor has informed me some universities will not accept AP credit for ENC 1101 and ENC 1102, will Florida State still require me to take ENC 1101 and ENC 1102 or will scoring high enough on the AP exam suffice?

AP credit works wonders! Score a 3 for ENC1101 and a 4 for both 1101 and 1102.

I am glad I did not pass either of the AP English exams. ENC 1101 and ENC 1102 are great classes to get you ready for writing college papers, and they’re nice GPA boosters too.

I thought that they were just credits and that you still have to take the classes

No, certain AP classes, if you pass them, can give you credit for the equivalent college class which makes you exempt from having to take it in college.

Do you know what classes?

Im sure FSU has a page somewhere on their site that will let you know. But for example, I took AP American history and AP psychology. I got credit for the intro psych class and american history class in college. Like previous posts said, AP comp will give you credit for comp 1 and 2 if you get high enough scores. You just have to look to find the page that will tell you.

All I did was type in “fsu ib credit” into the Firefox bar :)

Also, all Florida public universities are legally REQUIRED to accepted AP, IB, DE, and AICE credit for at least up to 30 credits, but FSU accepts them up to 45.

I saw that they gave credits, i just didnt know that it took up a class. =[

Well if for whatever reason you’d like to take a class that you already tested out of, you can do that… You’ll essentially we wasting a class though since you won’t get anymore credits. Oh and I guess if it’s an easy class it might boost your GPA.

If you score a 4 or 5 on AP english lang/lit, then you may not need to take the college course. Just don’t forget what you’ve learned, because you’ll be writing papers for as long as you’re at FSU.

Once your transcript shows what credits you have, you can call the registrar and cancel the credit if you don’t want to take the automatic credit. It is pass/fall type credit, does not go towards your GPA. And the english classes at FSU really stress writing, so if you feel weak in that area, and you want to cancel the automatic testing credit and take the class, you certainly can do so. For AP/IB credits from junior year and before, and for DE credits from fall and before, check the transcript on secure apps. They should be there now or soon. Those from spring of 2010 will go up over the summer.

If you get credit for the English class, don’t waste your time/money taking them again. If you really want a GPA booster that bad, take an elective that interests you, that will also give you credits towards graduation.

The only time I’d suggest retaking a credit is if it’s a pre-req, and you feel you’re not ready to move on. IE: Calculus I or II. I’m retaking Calc I next year since I have to go through Calc II and take Lin Algebra.
