high school students thinking about pre-med

I am so confused and I have so many questions. I am currently a junior in high school and want to pursue a medical carrer. and I was wondering is "pre-med" a major? cuz I've been told if we are going to the medical field, we must major in chemistry/biology....in college. However, I've seen people posting about majoring pre med in colleges...so I don't know which one is right. Also, I've been getting a lot of postcards from colleges lately, and I just went to a collegefair recently. I've noticed some colleges, such as Harrisburg University of Science and Techonology.....or University of Science in Philadelphia.....these colleges have like health clinical major...etc....and What I want to know is.....are they same like a medical school? I mean if I want to become a doctor/ dentist/pharmacist...or any other health related....do I considered going to a regular university/college......or should I go to like the two colleges I mentioned???

thank u for reading this longgggggggggg thread....any reply would be appreciated! thx for helping a confused and lost junior!

1.) Very few colleges -- usually not very reputable ones -- offer "Premed" majors and these majors should be avoided.

2.) You can major in any NORMAL subject you like. We used to tell kids that their major didn't matter and then they started coming in here with all kinds of odd plans -- no major at all, or majoring in nursing, or not graduating from college but getting a PharmD... major in anything normal and you'll be just fine. Biology, economics, sociology, history, philosophy, math, chemistry, engineering...

3.) You should start by going to a normal college. Get a BS in something.

thanks a lot bluedevilmike....

more posts please?!

I second everything bluedevilmike said, with the following additions.

As stated before, pre-med is not a major. To be pre-med means that you complete a certain sequence of classes required for medical school, such as biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, etc. Your college advisor will be able to help you decide exactly what classes to take, and you can also look at medical school websites to see what undergrad classes they require. You can complete these pre-med courses no matter what your major is. For example, you could be an Economics major but still take all the pre-med classes in addition to your Economics classes. If you are a science major, you kill two birds with one stone, since your classes for your major are also pre-med classes. However, you shouldn't be a science major unless you want to be. It is definitely doable to complete the pre-med classes in addition to a non-science major, and many people do it. Major in what you enjoy, because then your GPA will be higher.

You can go to college wherever you want. It doesn't have to be a science or technology school. Just make sure they offer a) your chosen major and b)pre-med classes.

As you are looking at colleges, check to see which schools have pre-med advising programs. Go for a school with a strong advising program, if possible.

thank u very much amanda9327

This forum is from 2007. Harrisburg university wasn’t accredited until 2009. I hope you didn’t go there. It’s now 2015, and that college is still bad news.
