High School vs College Engineering GPA

damn rocketDA, you sure don't give a crap about your non-engineering courses. :)

"damn rocketDA, you sure don't give a crap about your non-engineering courses. "

nah, i do... i just don't find myself motivated to making sure all of the hw is right and all of that jazz. i don't know what is wrong with me, but actually, i also don't do well on non-engineering tests either....

SATI 2230/2400, SATII scores high 700s-800
Freshman, USC undeclared engineering
HS GPA 3.5 weighted (top 50%)
USC GPA 3.7 or thereabouts

SATI 1400s/1600, SATII 700s
Soph MechE
HS gpa 4.0uw/4.6w
Pitt gpa 4.0 major and total

SAT 1 Math 600
Verbal 510
College GPA 2.6
Chemical Engineering GPA 3.25

HS GPA 4.3
SAT: 1270 (660/610)
IMO SAT = worst indicator of college performance
College: Cal Poly
Overall GPA: 3.93
Major GPA: 4.0
Major: industrial engineer
Year: junior

Nah, maybe Imaginary Engineering is just easy. :)

Why does ISE get so much hate? I like the ISE major.

It's just easier than other majors, that's all.

Meh, it may be easier but you can get just as good of jobs when you graduate. If you're interested in manufacturing or operations it's the way to go.

Of course. However, I'm not sure it's any better than ME for someone interested in manufacturing.

I guess the whole problem I have with saying ISE is an easier major is that it's bad enough that engineering majors look down upon non-engineering majors, but now you're going to look down on * other * engineering majors. That just annoys me. And ISE is engineering!

I love being an imaginary engineer :)

IE's are definitely a different breed of engineer, and definitely aren't subjected to the theoretical intensity of an ME. Different breed? Yes. Why? Well I started to type up an IE appreciation lecture but I'll spare you :) However, the IE department isn't filled with sky high GPAs either... so this factor doesn't correlate with the department's assumed "ease."

If you took a moment to look at the IE flowchart, and investigate some of the courses, you might be surprised to find that the relative difficulty is respectable. Nonetheless, I didn't consider how hard my major was when I chose it, just knew that I was, and still am, passionate about the courses.

Having said that... I still think that your SAT score is a horrible indicator of engineering success. Love what you do, and you will be fine.

See, I don't have feelings any which way. I'm ME but I think AeroE much harder at my school. I personally don't have any problem with it. Much like wfcp doesn't have any problem with ISE/IME being easier.

It's one thing to say it's easier, but when people say that it's not engineering and it doesn't deserve to be grouped with engineering, it annoys me. Because those students work hard and I don't feel that any student of any major should be disrespected.

I feel that EE is easier than chemE, but that really isn't the point. The point is some students in engineering will take it one step further and say that EE is a lesser major because of it. That is complete bs.

Well...some majors do work harder than others. And that's worth something. I mean, it's why engineering is more impressive than 90% of the other majors out there. It just requires that much more intelligence and drive to complete.

School: UCLA
SAT: 1450
HS GPA: 4.0
College GPA (Computer Science): 2.9
College GPA (Cumulative): 3.0

Payne, all I'm saying is that no major should be looked down upon, no matter what its relative easiness is. I agree, engineers work harder, but people need to be humble about it and quit insulting other majors. People will as a result feel embarrassed in what they're studying when they should feel very proud. I don't think I'm being unreasonable in what I'm saying.

{And don't deny that some engineering majors * insult * other majors rather than say it's easy. I'll let the easiness argument go, but I think you know there are people who go farther than that when describing other majors.}

I, unlike you, think that people who end up getting unmarketable majors that offer low value creation deserve less respect than others. I agree that verbal incivility is brash and unneeded, however there is nothing inherently wrong with the idea behind it.

Pride that has no backing reason is not something which should be valued. Should people be proud for graduating high school? Should people be proud for having a job? Pride should be something reserved for relative achievement.

easy or hard is relative.

kinesology majors are pretty hard if you can't run or ur like 300 lbs and can barely walk.
