High School vs. College

Hey guys,
I'm a Junior guy in highschool and i have a big question.

I am in Honors and AP classes, a lot of clubs, and sports. Honestly this year and last year, its been a lot of work and not much fun. I have friends and we hang out but with school taking up all morning and having around 3-5 hours of homework its a ton of stress. I like to party but honestly I dont go to many and I can only go out on friday nights really. Basically I have one big point:

How does college life compare to high school life?

I also have a few other questions,

I was wondering if college life is more "fun" is it a lighter work load at all?
Do people generally have more fun in the sense of going to more parties having less work and in general having more time for friends, free time activites and fun?
Are people nicer?
How does fraternity life compare to dorm life?

For the workload, depends, what do you plan on majoring in? The workload for someone majoring in Engineering will be heavier than for someone who’s majoring in, say, Psychology. Some majors will require Calculus and others will require Intro to Math. Other things factor into that, too. Intro to Sociology at UT, for example, requires you to do 45 hrs of volunteer work during the semester.

[How Is College Different From High School? - - SMU](http://smu.edu/alec/transition.asp) doesn’t talk much about the social aspect, but it might give you some thoughts about the academics.

Fraternity life would be HUGELY more social than dorm life; you basically get to live with the same people for 3-4 years as opposed to 1 or 2 semesters in a dorm. There’s much more sense of ‘family’ in fraternities, whereas (in my experience) people in the dorms make friends with their roommate, hallmates, and then people in classes. With a fraternity, your house will likely have parties every Thursday-Saturday and then some. Most dorms don’t allow alcohol or parties of any kind.

HOWEVER… many of my fraternity friends have been kicked out for poor grades. They were basically living the fraternity and putting school second.

But college compared to high school: college is MUCH better in terms of being social. In high school you usually have to take a certain amount of classes each day, but in college you only need 3 classes to be considered “part-time” and 4 to be considered “full-time.” During my junior and senior year, I was taking 18 credits (the max) and scheduled all my classes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, so I never had class Friday-Monday. It was awesome. I would bang out my homework/quizzes the same day they were assigned so I basically had 4 days off.

As long as you do all the homework, go to classes, etc it doesn’t matter if you’re in a fraternity or dorm life; you’ll do fine. The people who fail college are the ones who completely disregard academics.

In terms of workload college has “less busy work” BUT this usually means everything you do is weighed into your grade a lot more. For example, in HS you might have graded homework every night worth 10% of your grade. This would be the same in college (10% of your grade) but you would only have two or three homeworks-so they’re worth a lot more! There is a lot more studying but it is okay because you have (usuallY) 2 less classes and classes average 150 mins a week (5 x 150mins=750 mins / 60 is 12.5 hours spent in class a week where in HS you would have 6/7 hrs a day!–30/35 hrs a week)
