Hi--i'm going to be a freshman at BU this year... I got into Johns Hopkins for Pre-Med, but chose BU for the fin aid (only pay about $1000 a year)
....Anyways, I don't want to sound cocky or anything, but is all the work i did in high school pretty much worthless??

To name a few things:
-2 years of internships at ER, Pediatrics (all branches)
-extensive volunteering...absolutely everywhere...president of Key Club (2000+ hours in high school)
-Founder of charity project, featured on cover of city newspaper....

at my college orientation, the speakers were saying it doesn't matter at all what you did in high school anymore...i did a lot of work in hs, but does it even count towards anything when applying to med school? thanks for the input, hope you respond ;D

Not really. However, if you went to high school in the same area you are going to college in then you could simply continue most of what you did in high school and then it would count. Also if you keep up similar work in college then you could maybe use that as an extension of work from high school.

Doesn't count towards med school. If you still have a part in the charity project that will count, and you can throw in the fact that you founded it. But volunteering and such, that starts all over again now for med schools. They really don't care about volunteering in high school, only during college. Now if you continue the volunteering from h.s. you will be golden. And you can say that you did that much volunteering for that many years total.

sprkl. It may not 'count' for med school. But what do you think got you into those great schools which will prepare you for mcat. All your life experiences will make you a better interviewer, will make you more interesting and give you something to discuss in the interviews. All those experiences are what makes you special and that may be what will tip the scale in the decisions. Further, at least the volunteering was beneficial to others. Please don't feel that what you've done is a waste. Its all good! I think what the college speakers were trying to tell you, is don't just sit back and glide toward graduation. Do something more.

thank you so much for everything :) I know that it hasn't gone completely to waste (it's helped people ;D ) but academically, I didn't know whether it was worth anything anymore--- Unfortunately, I'm moving 2000 miles away to go to college, so I can't continue anything--I guess I'll just start afresh at BU. Thanks. :D

i'd hope you wouldn't think it was a waste simply because it doesn't count towards med school! (good thing you don't :) )

I have a big problem with people doing such acts just because it looks good on their application. where's the passion and general interest?
