High School Ws

I was at a concurrent enrollment high school for the first semester of my senior year. In the fall I was enrolled in two courses at the college, but after becoming ill I had to drop them. I was ill for most of the fall and had to leave my high school before the end of the semester. There are now 2 Ws on my transcript and I have a GED. I was ill a lot throughout high school and my mother was hospitalized several times. My grades correspond to the events in my life. When my mother was hospitalized or I was ill my grades were terrible (Bs, Cs, and Ds), but the rest of the time I was receiving As. My transcript is a mess, but I have lots of ECs and strong character references. I received As in my spring semester college courses and I currently have As in my summer courses. Will the high school Ws and messy transcript sabotage my chances of transferring to a top 10 school as a junior?

I’m a Political Science major who is particularly interested in political philosophy. The schools I would most like to attend are Stanford, Duke, Dartmouth, Columbia, and Georgetown SFS. My slightly more realistic goals are UVA, Georgetown, UNC-CH, and Berkeley (I’m an instate transfer from a CCC). I will be applying this spring for fall 2007 admission. Do I even stand a slight chance at my first choice schools?

I'm not admissions counselor, but , document, document, document. Have a nice letter briefly outlining your illness, mother's illness corresponding grades and results. THEN indicate that is past now, and would not continue to be a problem. You can't go back in past and avoid those setbacks, but Try to convince others they are done now.

I also recommend you first try your "sales pitch" on a couple of schools that only interest you somewhat- in order to better hone your story.

But what is you gpa as of right now?

I appreciate the prompt replies. I currently have a 3.85. During the spring I had an 89.5% in Logic, but my college doesn’t have pluses and my professor wouldn’t bump it to an A.

I’m in the honors program at my college. I’m taking as many honors classes as I can each semester (three in the fall).

If I were you, I would make a nice realistic list of schools. Really think about it. Make a list of your dream top notch schools and also make a list of more humble schools. Your gpa is great, and you can write a bit about your troubles as long as you do not make it the focus of your admissions essay. But, you should keep your options really open.

I like this web site. But I have seen a lot of posts about people solely desiring to go to top notch schools and only top notch schools. But I really think being open minded and realistic is good. It is not always prudent to hang your hopes on just one certain type of thing.

I have a good GPA and I'm a CCC student so I have the UC system to fall back on. The UCs don't focus much on high school grades nor do they seem to care much about Ws. I’m applying to Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, and UCD in November. I don’t want to go to such large schools and I’d really love to be on the east coast, but I’m taking all of the transfer requirements anyway. My dad doesn't want me out of state, but he'll support me if I get into one of my dream schools. If I only get into safety/safe match schools out of state I don’t think it’s worth taking out massive loans and I know my parents won’t support me. I sincerely appreciate all of the great advice you’re giving me!
