High School XC

hi all. how would it look to a college admission officer if a freshman was a varsity xc runner and then quit it from sophomore year due to shin splints . health opinions aside as we know it could be a lingering problem for some.

Wouldn’t move the needle in either direction. I assume the applicant has other quality EC’s to put in the app. In fact, there is no reason to put in XC at all if it is no longer important to the applicant.

Thanks BKsquared. That’s an idea. not to put it in. so from this I gather that one should only put EC that one will continue all 4 years of high school?

Incorrect. One can list an EC that one did for less than 4 years. But given limited space, one really would want to focus in on the most important ones. An EC for a year is probably not going to rank up there.

But I agree with @BKSquared . For a kid who’s not a recruited athlete, it will make no difference one way or the other.

Thanks @SKIEUROPE . guess possible to clarify saying shin splints prevented continuity of xc. althought varsity in freshman year

I’m not a big fan of using the application to make excuses. He can list XC, or he can omit it. It’s not going to tip the scale one way or another. Also, to be clear, except for athletic recruits, AOs do not give brownie points for doing varsity as a freshman.

The only circumstance where I might put in an excuse is say your son/daughter was XC varsity frosh thru junior, and in fact on of the best in the district/state but is not running XC this year because of an injury. In your case, I’d lean towards just leaving it off.
