High School

Hah, about 550 of 650 kids in our class really don’t care the slightest, then there’s about 50 or so who sort of care and get good grades, and then there are the obsessives who are amazingly intelligent and or grade/getting into top college-obsessed. Even though most don’t care, the crazy ones bring our school the numerous ivy acceptances and the competitive feel in the top classes.

Hah! Competitive ambience, right. Maybe just between me and my republican friend to see who can make the most politically incorrect jokes in any given lunchtime.

Seriously, though, I’m good friends with the girls who are ranked 2 and 4 in the class. We were recently sent updated GPA and class rank in the mail, and this converation followed.
2: “I’m really glad my class rank is the same.”
4: “I know, I would hate to be higher than this.”
2: “Poor (#1) works so much harder than I do, it wouldn’t be fair if I was #1.”
4: “And there’s so much more pressure up at the top.”
Me: “I’m sad my class rank went up so much [I used to be #70; I’m 63 now]. I really wanted to be #69.”

Like mandi, I could sometimes do without the competitiveness but like going somewhere where it’s considered normal to focus on academics(70% being Asians would explain it). I guess It would be nice to be a genius at mediocre school instead of being merely average at a school like mine, but I don’t know if I’d fit. I’ve never been into typical high school things like Friday night football, rallies, etc.

Yay for geniuses at mediocre schools!

Everyone (pretty much) in my school is intelligent, but we don’t compete with each other as much as we compete with ourselves. I think it’s better that way.

That being said, we are the types of people who, upon receiving report cards/tests/whatever, rush towards our friends to compare and exclaim, “Ugh you got straight As I hate you.”

competition is one thing my school lacks.

For my school, it’s not a debate about which state school to attend. Instead, it’s which stiff-collar religious everyone-there-has-blond-hair-and-blue-eyes LAC should I attend? I like xxx, but it doesn’t have a traveling basketball team…
