high school

For admissions, does going to a difficult high school, public or private, mean anything? Do the adcoms realize your gpa would be probably be higher at most other schools, in the same way that they recognize that a gpa would be higher with easier classes?

Yes and yes.

not necessarily - it depends on the rigor of your schedule.

i think it depends on the school. what type are you in?

it depends on how well-known your school is but MOST universities have a good sense of what a difficult school is and what a difficult course schedule is.

if my high school is one of the top 25 schools in the nation, do you think colleges would know?

private school--ranked on some wall street journal list in top 25 for getting students into top colleges--the school typically sends about 20% to ivies (not incl other top schools), but do colleges recognize that i'd have better grades at my local public school (probably not true for all public schools, but it definitely is for the one i'd go to)?

The rigor of your school matters in context, but I don't think it's a huge advantage if you attend a more highly ranked school. Colleges know if your school is hard or not. They know at some schools making an A is amazing, and at others it's really common.
