high schooler at UNC summer

I reallllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly want to go to UNC so i was looking a the summer program.. I haven't applied yet because they start taking applications in February but is this extremely hard for rising high school seniors? has any high schooler ever done this on CC? will i be surrounded completely by non-high school students..?

sorry for silly questions, thanks.

bump (:

Since no one has answered you, are you talking about the 5-week sessions, from May 13 to June 17, and then again from June 19-July 25? Or are you referring to something different, specifically for high school students?

Regardless, I'll give you my take. I think students often take courses at specific colleges in the summer, thinking it might give them a leg up in admissions (at that particular school) the following year. I don't think it does (at any school). While doing so would definitely allow you to learn something new, experience the campus and the town, meet like-minded people, be in some great classes, etc (and so worthwhile in that way), I really think you're better off using your summer in other equally productive/creative ways.
Feel free to PM me if you want more information.

that helps a lot thanks janie!

I did this last summer myself as a rising senior. I took Calc II and Philosophy of Science. It was pretty sweet. If you need any help just e-mail me:

I don't get on here regularly, but do check that. But generally, it was very easy to get in, especially if your test scores/academic record are decent (I had a 2240 SAT, if you need some idea of my background). I believe they just required a transcript, scores, and letters both from yourself and your counselor. I really felt like they have a pretty open policy though. I didn't get all of these materials in until like a week before the semester, and my housing application wasn't cleared until the day before hahaha. I got a room to myself, and only had to pay for a double! Sweet!

But good luck! I know I had a lot of fun! It sure beats high school haha.

Oh and to answer your other questions:

I did get into UNC early admission. I couldn't say if going to the summer program increased my chances; honestly, I would have gotten in regardless. However, it did show me how great of a school Carolina is. And if you're someone who truly likes to learn, the environment itself is worth it.

I was part of their second summer session, which ran from late June to late July. If you will still be in high school for your second semester, this is probably the one you will enroll in too, because the other starts in early May.

And I was the only high schooler I know of who was there. I'm sure there were a few others, just not in any of my classes. But if you're worried about that, don't be! It may feel a little awkward at first - like when I couldn't figure out how to work the laundry machines, and people were staring at me haha - but you'll adapt! I don't even think my profs knew that I was a high schooler, but that's how I wanted it.

But seriously, e-mail me if you need more info!
