High Scores, Low GPA

Hi, I applied to CIT and MSS and I was wondering how CMU weights GPA compared to test scores.

My test scores a pretty good:
ACT
- Verbal - 36
- Math - 36
- Sci - 33
- English - 34
- Composite - 35

SAT I: 2190 (1470)
SAT II US History: 710
SAT II Chem: 760
SAT II Math level 2: 720

However, my GPA kinda stinks. It's 3.67 weighted, and I think around 3.2 unweighted. I've taken 8 AP classes which is one or two less than the maximum possible for me, and all my other classes have been honors. Also, I got a 5 on AP Chem and AP Language/Composition, though I don't think they see these scores. How badly will my GPA kill me?

MCS* (why can’t you edit posts?)

Also, how important is the essay?

Your rigor is more important, and your essay and recommendations are very important.

Depending on what AP classes you’ve taken and exactly what the grades are, you may still have a chance, albeit a lower one.

I think my recommendations are going to be good because my AP Chem teacher wrote it right after she found out I got a 5, and my physics teacher wrote it right after I got a 100% for the marking period.

My essay could go either way, because I was on the verge of not applying the night it was due, so I wrote it in about 45 minutes and didn’t have anyone proof-read it.

My AP classes are as follows:
Chemistry (C+)
US History (B)
English Comp (B)
French (B right now)
Calculus AB (B right now)
Physics (C+ right now)
English Lit (B+ right now)
Econ (A right now)

I think your problems will be if you have any of those C’s on a transcript.

Sorry, but if you have more than one C on a transcript you’re pretty much without a hope unless there’s a good explanation.

aw, tough break. looks like it’ll probably be penn state for me.

No harm in applying, just don’t expect too much. Write good essays and get good rec letters and you may have an outside shot.
