high test score does it help any?

In your experience, how does an ACT composite score of 33 help a candidate in either the nomination process or the admissions office evaluation (assuming good gpa reqs & physical test)?

USMA looks at the whole candidate using a whole candidate score system - 60% academics, 30% leadership potential (ECs, sport, leadership positions etc.), and 10% Physical (fitness test).

SATs/ACTs are very important in the academic score, so high ACT scores are looked upon very favorably, if the rest of the package is there as well.
Here is a link to a recent class profile:
[United States Military Academy at West Point](http://www.usma.edu/class/2012/profile.asp)

Assuming the candidate has reasonably good grades, the ACT/SAT score is probably the most important single element in the academic rating of a candidate by USMA admissions. A 33 composite ACT score is excellent and should put you in the top 25% of candidates.

The score is likely less important in the nomination process which I believe puts more weight on the candidate’s overall profile, interview performance and submitted letters of recommendation.
Good luck.

SAT’s/ACT’s are important because they are ONE way applicants can be compared to each other on a national basis. They do NOT tell the whole story.
I actually think high school course selection plays a very important role in your academic score. A 33 is a very good score - no question. Hopefully, your son has excellent grades which show ambition and are taking the most challenging classes your high school offers.

Candidates who don’t have as lofty an ACT score should not be discouraged - course selection and grades can help to make up for a lower score - to a point.

Nominations are the sole responsibility of the individual members of congress. Each Congressional Office establishes their own criteria for evaluating candidates. For the most part, they want to choose candidates with a desire for military service who have a good chance at succeeding at the academy.
Some MOC’s do rely heavily on academics. Some even have a minimum SAT/ACT threshhold before your application will be considered.

40% of that 60% are test score the other 20% are grades.
