Higher Score on SAT is Impossible

I went from a 500 VERBAL, 610 MATH in Feb.2005 to a 580 VERBAL, 680 MATH yesterday.

yesterday? you mean october? o_0 you havent gotten scores yet..

hm...I took my first SAT completely cold, didn't even look at the instructions in the packet before hand and got 2160. Took the second one (again cold unless you count the first time I took it) and got 2260.

So, just saying that you can take SATs without prep and do moderately well. Probably coulda done better but, eh, what's the point?

I'm saying after you prep once, you cannot increase your score.

well, depends on the score. The higher you go, the harder it is to increase because statistically, you'll probably get at least one question wrong per section and beyond that, it's luck.

As for not increasing after prepping, maybe that's just the score you're stuck at. SATs measure aptitude, right? If anyone who had the money for prep books and courses could study and get a perfect score, what use would they be?

where do they sell the red book?

I don't know. I have the red book from buying it a year or two ago and never opening it.

what is the best book to increase math? I need to learn math concepts, not just strategies..

I see that rocket review really helped someone...were you just making stupid mistakes, or were you not very good at math. Because I am simply horrible at it, and I need some help.

quitejaded, you are quite annoying and if you want any help you should drop that smartass attitude and appreciate all of the tips that you have gotten so far.

what IS the red book? I dont think ive ever seen it
can some1 link to it from amazon?

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0874476542/102-8768953-9450525?v=glance

btw- This is the second edition. There are three editions of the red book, each containing three (I believe) new tests not in the previous edition (but overall there are 10 tests in each book).

Srry jaded lol, i was scanning through the whole thing didnt bother to read every word. Thought u meant that raising score is impossible with the red and blue book. Anyway my bad :)

I am not sure exactly what it is about rocket review, but I didn't find it boring to work through (like barrons) and after working through all the "experience sets" and using their "4 math rules", i really felt SO much more confident about my math section.

however, I've always been good at math, so... I dunno. My big problem was time, and RR helped me a lot with that. I didn't really work through the actual factual part of the rocket review book (where it reviews algebra concepts, geometry, etc.), but that may be helpful to you as well.

I bought two books: rocket review, and barrons. Barrons I found mind numbingly boring, RR I found interesting and even entertaining at some parts, and I feel totally confident about the score I got.

I'll let you know on Oct 24th how much I really improved!

quitejaded,

I can understand your frustration. While some students can improve quite a bit on their own, other students may need some direction and guidance to excel on the SAT. I would strongly recommend seeking a good private tutor in your case. In my experience, ANYONE can improve (although not always amazingly) on the SAT with some hard work and the right advice. One of my students has already improved from a 1520 to a 2280 (as measured on official diagnostics) on the SAT (she just took her PSAT last week). She has a real chance of scoring a 2350-2400 if she keeps pushing until the November SAT. If she can improve by 760+ points, I'm sure you can improve by more than 100 points. BTW, what is your current score? What are your weaknesses?

Some good books I can recommend are RocketReview and Maximum SAT (written by our own PeteSAT). Barron's Math Workbook is also great.

I would appreciate the tips if I didn't KNOW them ALREADY. :)

Yeah, RR is fun. The way the author speaks to you is friendly and personal.

Well, Godot. My current (they've been higher before, but I think those tests were too easy) scores are 650 in M, 680 CR. I don't care about writing--its fine. I have problems with the last 2 or 3 problems of every math section and there is always one or 2 questions in CR that I just cannot get.

Like I already said, I haven't actually WORKED through RR (or the other ones you mentioned) but I've been doing the Xiggi method and used Grammatix. Gone through the whole blue book. Half the red book. And even a few practice pamphlets. After I stopped my prep, I took a test and scored. I prepped some more (for about a month) and my score didn't move an inch. Xiggi method doensn't work. Its like, you either SEE the problem or you don't. I'm sure if you condition yourself over a huge period of time, you can do it, but not in the 4 months that I had obviously.

friendly and personal usually don't work too well...Go for MEGA tutoring in flushing.

hehehe...i borrowed the blue book ...did two tests to re-prep after the summer for the march 2005...and kicked standardized ass.

RR? Never heard of it. So, I really can't make any assumptions.

However, CB and MEGA has worked for me.
Sorry if that didn't help too much. : 3

how accurate are PSAT proyections for SAT scores?? According to my PSAT (took it last year) I should be getting around 2100, and hopefully I'll raise my math score ( I really didnt care about PSATs when I took it so I didnt do it as carefully as I should've).... I'll try to get some practice before taking the SATs on november 5th, but unfortunately my review books havent arrived yet...damn costa rican postal service...probably got lost at the main offices , Ill have to call tomorrow, lol.....pointless rambling there, sorry

i have the Barron's Math Workbook and dont really find it beneficial. I mean i worked through half the book and my math score still hasnt improved from a 650-670. How can I use that book so that it would improve my math score to a 750?

your score (650-670) is from Barron's or blue book or others?

from blue book.

blue book is accurate. to your math level, i think you should use other prectice book such as kaplan pr.
