I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to make a list of the most well-known and prestigous colleges in New Jersey? Those that are great in academics and such.

Besides Princeton and Rutgers I mean! ^^;

I'd really appreciate the help ASAP! Thank you so much!

Thanks for the responses. Really, is Drew that good? I heard that it wasn't that great. ^^; I was going for Rowan as well, but I heard that it's in South Jersey, and the distance is far from where I live.

Any feedback on this matter would be great~! Thank you!

USN&WR ranks Drew University at #63 among LACs, ahead of such schools as Muhlenberg, Ursinus, New College of Florida, St. Mary's of Maryland and Hobart and William Smith. Take that for what you think it's worth.

The biggest criticism I have heard of Drew from parents whose kids attended the college is that it is something of a suitcase school -- lots of kids from New Jersey who head home on the weekend. These reports are somewhat dated as the students in question either graduated or transferred out more than 5 years ago. I have heard contradictory testimony on CC from parents of current students.

The College of New Jersey, Rowan, Ramapo and Rider are all categorized as "Master's Universities" by USN&WR. They are ranked #5, #28, #32 and #33among Master's Universities in the Northeast region.

Rutgers
TCNJ
Stevens Institute
Drew, Seton Hall
Ramapo, Rowan, NJIT
Monmouth, Rider
Branches of Rutgers in Newark and Camden
William Patterson, Kean, Edison, Richard Stockton

Ramapo College of NJ has a good reputation in North Jersey, beautiful campus located in the Ramapo Mountains. It is approximately 45 minutes away from NYC, touted as "New Jersey Public Liberal Arts College." TCNJ, in my high school, has become the new Rutgers, everyone applied there. Popularity has really risen in recent years, known as the public Ivy in NJ. The campus is beautiful, but I personally liked Ramapo's better, yet I think it's a matter of preference. Very solid academics at TCNJ, intelligent student body. Drew University is a well respected liberal arts college, overly expensive but has noted programs in political science, theatre, and English. Madision is a nice town, suburbia. A lot of my classmates also gear toward Montclair.. very strong education department. Rowan in Glassboro and Richard Stockton in Pomona are overlap schools.. I think Rowan is stronger though. Stockton is more commuter, only 30 percent live on campus, but near Atlantic City. Not many of my classmates venture toward the South Jersey schools. Monmouth, I have heard, is a beautiful campus right on the beach. Yep, hope that helped!

When we were looking TCNJ was a good school, but small and not guaranteed housing. My son chose Drew because he liked it, his teachers and GC spoke highly of it and it was rated well (even higher then) He doesn't think it's a suitcase school and most of his dorm/friends live 4+ hours away or are international. That doesn't mean there aren't a lot from NJ, but if they leave, they usually don't stay the whole weekned, just stock up. Most students paying for board, don't really want to leave for home every weekend.

I agree with 2-Iron and I live in NJ, right outside Princeton.

I would say Rutgers would be the best bet though, Princeton is an excellent school and anyone would know to pick Princeton over Rutgers, if you can't get into Princeton then you should go for Rutgers. IMO, Rutgers will give you a very good college experience, good school, good sports programs, nice people, and lets not forget...about an hour away from that beautiful Jersey Shore!

Yeah, I'm pretty much aiming for Rutgers, but it's good to know other colleges and see what they have to offer, right?

I was aiming for Princeton at first, but later decided to drop it. They really ask for too much, and my SAT/SATIIs weren't up to par with them. :|It would of been great to see if I could get in, but they're too selective with their choices. Ah well.

I've heard countless times that Rutgers has a rolling deadline, so you could appy anytime (I've heard that space doesn't run out until the summer? Is this true?). But I have just one question though..what if the three selected schools you applied for in Rutgers are full when you apply? I mean..what if you get accepted and everything, but the schools you chose don't have any more room for freshmen (I'm talking about Rutgers NB, btw). Does that mean that there'd be no chance for the student who applied to get into Rutgers, or could they still get in, but enter a different school? Has this ever happened to anyone before? What are your thoughts on this matter?

Hi Everyone, My son has been accepted to Rowan, Drew, Ramapo, and Quinnipiac. Which in your opinion would be the best school for an english/secondary education major with a minor in journalism?

I agree with 2-iron. I’m just going to space out the list a bit by reputations, and add Montclair.

Princeton

Rutgers
TCNJ

Stevens Institute
Drew, Seton Hall, NJIT

Ramapo

Rowan, Monmouth, Rider

Branches of Rutgers in Newark and Camden (it actually depends on the programs, though. Some of the programs should definitely be higher up on the list, and some should be lower), Montclair State (really good music program, though)

William Patterson, Kean, Edison (? I’m actually not sure what school this is), Richard Stockton

I agree with 2-Iron’s list, although Monmouth may warrant a higher rating. It’s is my understanding that TCNJ is tougher to get into than Rutgers right now.

For secondary ed degree, I wouldn’t spend the money for a private school, not worth it IMHO. (Unless you have the cash and don’t mind spending it.)
